Year 2 History & Geography - Connectedness

How can the past impact the present and future?

(Tuning In) : Lesson 2
Overview
In this lesson, students will encounter how the past can impact the present and future. Students
will detail what they remember from their past in a concept map individually. After this has
occurred, as a class students will discuss their past in an open discussion and will detail how their
past may impact them in the present and for the future (i.e. my great grandmother is French and I
take French classes, in the present I want to travel to where my great grandmother lived). To
conclude, students will write how the past can impact the present and future in their learning
journal.

Explanation
Students have previously been introduced to connectedness. Students have previously discovered

Student Orientated Instruction

1. The teacher will begin the lesson by asking children what they know of the past, present
and future. Students will detail to the teacher what they think the past, present and future is,
the teacher will choose students by selecting a paddle-pop stick (with students names
written on individual sticks) to randomly select students, students are able to phone a
friend if they dont know (William, 2011). After the discussion, the teacher will ask a student
to put the printed definitions onto the word wall.
2. The teacher will explain to the students that they will now explore their past by answering
questions in a concept map (like done in the previous lesson but individually). The
questions that students need to answer and organise in a concept map include:
Do you remember your past?
What was important to you from your past?
How do you participate in your local community in the present?
Is there elements from your past that currently play a role in your life today (the present)?
Are there elements from your past and present which you would like to do in the future? (ie.
I have helped others in the past and I like to help others, in the future I would like to be a
nurse)
These questions will be written or displayed on the board for the students to utilise when
constructing their concept map.
3. The teacher will move through the classroom ensuring students are on task and forming
their concept map.
4. As a class, students will discuss their past in an open discussion and will detail how their
past may impact them in the present and for the future.
5. To conclude, students will write how the past can impact the present and future in their
learning journal.
