Tiddalik The Frog Informative Text: Lesson 9


Overview
In this lesson students will investigate the inquiry question: Why is Tiddalik the Frog so important
to the indigenous community? Students will review and reflect on their own learning about
Tiddalik the Frog. Students will apply what they have learnt from the previous lesson and
develop a deeper understanding of this landmark through an informative text. As a class, we will
construct a class informative report in preparation for the final assessment piece. This lesson,
will help students develop their literacy skills and students can discuss and compare their ideas
with each other during this lesson.

Explanation
In the previous lesson, students have researched about the landmark of Tiddalik the Frog and
have put together a concept map of the important and relevant information.

General Capabilities
Literacy
Students will be developing an information report about Tiddalik the Frog. They will be
focusing on the content, structure and vocabulary in this assessment.
Personal and Social Capability
For this lesson, students will be constructing this example of an information report as a
class. Having a class example, gets the students engaged and can address
misconceptions about the landmark or the report. Students must contribute to the
example.
Intercultural Understanding
Throughout this lesson, students are extending their knowledge on Tiddalik the Frog and
how they can further develop their skills of how they value it.

Student Orientated Instruction


1. The previous lesson students researched about the importance and significance of the
landmark Tiddalik the Frog
2. For this lesson, model/scaffold students ability to write an informative text about Tiddalik
the frog final assessment will be an informative text
3. Hand out to each student the informative text guide.
4. As a class write an information report. Ensure the key ideas and relevant information
are there. Use whiteboard if more research is needed.
5. Ensure all students are on task and understand what an information report is.
6. Once the text has been written look at the checklist (Appendix B) and tick what has been
included in this example and what still needs to be done.
7. At the end of the lesson discuss what they have done and make sure every student has
an example completed.

Modification for students with varying degrees of ability


Support
Allow a teacher aide/ parent helper to be in the classroom
Breakdown the lesson if needed try alternative ways with the information report (start with
key ideas/dot points, then work into sentence and structure)
Ensure all students understand an information report and how to write it.
Extension
Allow students to proofread it
Add additional information if necessary.
