the first truly social and digital mega sports event: Olympic games, london 2012. International
Journal of Sports Marketing & Sponsorship, 15(3), 151-160.

This article shows the effects of twitter on a world-wide stage, at the Olympics. This article also shows
the marketing side of the media, and why the market feast off of twitter during major events.
This article explains how social media is more regularly used through social media rather than
normal media like TV and radio. I will use parts of this article to help explain how widespread
social media has become as well as some parts of the marketing scheme of the article. However,
I will not use very much of it due to how often marketing is the main topic in this article.

Cotterill, S. T., & Symes, R. (2014). Integrating social media and new technologies into your practice
as a sport psychology consultant. Sport & Exercise Psychology Review, 10(1), 55-64.

This article mainly explains how technology and social media are used during practice in professional
sports. It mainly summarizes how social media is used to be a news tool. The article goes into
detail on how social media has become one of the biggest tools to alert the people on what
injuries and updates are happening during practice. The psychological aspect of sports is also
briefly described in here on how it can negatively affect athletes as well. I will use parts of this
article in my research paper like the psychological part because it shows the negative side of
social media. I will use bits and pieces of the rest of the article mainly because it doesnt relate to
my topic that well.

amount of journalism, and it covers how social media has helped journalism to become much
easier to cover and write. It also explains how it has made communication much easier from

station to station due to the readiness of the news update as well as helping as well as the
interview in this article that talks to a journalist on why it is becoming so much easier for them. I
will be using these articles to help show how reporting has become much easier within the sports
world due to social media. I will also be using this article to cover the reporter or journalists
standpoint on why social media has made it so much easier for them.

Gibbs, C., O'Reilly, N., & Brunette, M. (2014). Professional team sport and twitter: Gratifications
sought and obtained by followers. International Journal of Sport Communication, 7(2), 188-213.

This article helps to show the communication between professional athletes, professional sports
teams, fans. This article discusses how many fans look to find fame by being followed by famous
athletes and celebrities on twitter. It also explains the battle for advertising and such by team
twitter pages and their amount of followers. These amount of followers is very important due to
the advertising side of things and how cost effective it is because of not having to pay for air time
or commercials. I will be using this article to explain the fame seen by obtaining followers as well
as the advertising of teams for free by using social media.

athletic departments. International Journal of Sport Communication, 7(4), 516-532.

This article helps to take a side look into collegiate social media uses. It helps to show the similarities
and differences between the collegiate sports life and the professional sports life. Twitter and
such help collegiate athletes to gain reputation before becoming a professional athlete. This helps
to be drafted and gain more fans before becoming a pro. I will not being using much of this
article because it is based mainly on collegiate athletes. I will use a little bit; however, to show
comparison between how social media affects the professional teams and collegiate teams.

OBoyle, I. (2014). Mobilising social media in sport management education. Journal of Hospitality,

This article covers the area of education on social media in sports. It shows how technology can help
to spread education on sports management faster. The article mainly only covers the educational

side of things on my topic. For that reason, I will not be able to pull much out of this article for
my paper; however, I will try to salvage parts on how social media helps to mobilize statistics and
news on professional sports.

PARK, J., & DITTMORE, S. W. (2014). The relationship among social media consumption, team
identification, and behavioral intentions. Journal of Physical Education & Sport, 14(3), 331-336.

This article does a great job of showing how twitter has helped teams attend to the fan needs faster
and more effective than taking tests and surveys. Twitter also allows the professional athletes to
reach out to their fans in a non-threatening way. The article describes how many athletes feel
much more comfortable by talking to fans this way rather than face to face contact. This article
also shows a graph on the positives that come from twitter. It shows the change in fan responses,
match updates, and much more. This article will help me by providing crucial information on how
twitter can benefit athletes and their teams in a positive way. It will also help by explaining why
players enjoy twitter and the connections it provides with fans.

This article helps to show the relationships between media, clubs, and the athletes. The articles show
multiple different sides of how the relationships of athletes and media and or their clubs are
impacted through the use of twitter and other social media websites. It is another article
discussing how important the role of twitter is for communication between the two different
groups. I will use this article to help strengthen my area of focus on the impact of how twitter
affects athletes. Also, I will use the areas of the article that describe how the journalists can
receive help from social media.

This article helps to bring light onto old social media and media relations. It helps to show history on
how social media is impacting in different ways than previous media. This article also describes
and discusses overcoming the negative stereotypes on womens sports. It helps to bring light
onto womens sports and why they should be watched and judged just like mens. I will use this
article mainly for its focus on womens cases. The rest of the article is pretty generic, and it is on
what I have already found in my previous articles.

Vogan, T. (2014). Keepers of the flame: NFL films and the rise of sports media. Urbana, IL: U of
Illinois P.

This book mainly talks about the rise of media in the sports industry. It touches more on the media
side in general rather than the social media aspect of the game. For that purpose, I will not use
much of this book due to the lack of specifics. I will use it for some of its information on past
media to show statistical difference between previous media and present social media.
