q and u
Trace and write the letters

Assessment(s) of Student Learning: Students will be assessed on their
ability to:
Write the letters q and u by completing the booklet Wedding of
Q and U.
Students will be assessed on their knowledge of the sound that qu
makes by accurately drawing pictures that begin with the /kw/ sound.
Step-By-Step Procedure:
Hook: I will begin by explaining that today we have a very special
lesson about the letters q and u. In fact, the students will be
cordially invited to attend the wedding of Mrs. Q and Mr. U. If the
students behave during the wedding/lesson there will be a special
treat for them at the end. We will review and recite the rhyme about
Q and U that they have previously learned. Q and U, stuck like
glue. Whenever theres a Q, theres a U. I will then explain that it is
time for the wedding.

Content: 1. I will call students by group to come up and sign the

guestbook for the wedding before they sit on the carpet. 2. I will
explain that in order to prepare for the wedding, we have to review
the letters Q and U, and some words that begin with Qu. 3. I will
write capital Qu and lowercase qu on the white board easel, and
explain the steps. 4. Then, I will ask if anyone knows the sound that
qu makes. I will have the students repeat after me as I say the /kw/
sound several times. 5. After that, I will show the students a series of
cards. Each card will have the word and picture of an object that
begins with qu. Students will repeat after me as I read each card &
act out the picture if possible. 6. When that is completed, we will be
ready to read the book (which contains the wedding ceremony) 7. I
will read the book, stopping at any points that I feel I need to explain
or clarify. When I get to the wedding part of the book, I will hold the
letters Q and U during the ceremony. 8. After reading, I will call group
by group to go back to their seats
Guided Practice & Independent Practice: Students will work on
their Wedding Packets on their own, but can ask for guidance when
needed. Students will work to circle the qu in the words with the
pictures, then practice writing Qu below. After I check to make
sure they circled the right letters and wrote their letters correctly,
they will then draw a picture of an object that starts with qu in the
gift box to give as a wedding present to Mrs. Q and Mr. U. If the
students were well-behaved during the lesson and read aloud, I will
come around with a Ring Pop as a wedding treat, while they
complete the wedding packet.
Closure: Ask students what did you learn today about the letters Q
and U? What sound do the letters qu make?
