Nicholas II- Became czar in 1894 who continued Russian autocracy which was a bad

thing to do at the changing time he was in.


Rasputin- A self-described holy man who Nicholas IIs wife fell for while leading the
government when her husband was a way. Since, he eased the childrens symptoms
of hemophilia; she let him make key political decisions. He obtained powerful
positions and opposed reforms until he was murdered by a group of nobles for his
increasing role in the system.
Bolsheviks- Factory workers stormed the Winter Palace and took over government
officials and made Kerensky disappear quickly. They then gave control of factories to
the workers and signed a truce with Germany that they would begin peace talks.
Mensheviks- Moderate wanted more of popular support for the revolution, better
conditions/pay/ and hours in factories
Soviets- Local councils of workers, peasants, and soldiers that had more influence in
some cities than the provisional government.
Lenin- Referred to as The Father of Revolution, he had ill feelings for the
government and would eventually take over the Czar. He was loved by his country.
Russo-Japanese War- Fought for control of Manchuria and Korea after Russia broke
agreements with Japan which caused them to attack them. Russia would get
slaughtered and news of how many died caused revolt back home.
Bloody Sunday- 200,000 workers unarmed marched to the palace to talk to Czar.
But, while walking to the guards, troops protecting the palace fired at them and
killed several hundreds. This lead to the czar promising more freedom, which was
the duma, but then that got quickly dissolved.
WW1- More than 4 million Russian soldiers were killed, injured, or imprisoned due to
hoe weak the Russian army was. They were poorly equipped in troops and were not
prepared to handle military and economic cost. They were dragged in by Nicholas II.
March Revolution-Provisional Government- Alexander Kerensky- in Petrograd,
woman textile workers led a citywide strike on March of 1917. Over 200,000 workers
shouted Down with Autocracy! and would ultimately get the Russian Troops to
side with them. This lead Nicholas II to step down. They succeeded to make the Czar
step down but were unable to replace him with a strong government. That
government was led by Kerensky who decided to continue fighting in WW1 which
cost him many supporters he once had. Soviets, which were local councils of
workers, peasants, and soldiers that had more power in some cities than the
provisional government.
November Revolution-All power to the Soviets and Bread, Land, and Peace. two
slogans used by Lenin. These two slogans gained widespread appeal. This all took
place in the fall of 1917.

Treaty of Brest-Litovsk- The Germans believed that Lenin returning back to Russia
would cause unrest, so they arranged for him to go back home by traveling in a box
car.
Trotsky- Commanded Red Army in the Civil War.
Civil War Bolsheviks had to fight enemies at home now. Their opponent was the
white army who was only united for the sole desire that the Bolsheviks were
defeated. They were made up of groups who opposed Lenin socialism style, wanted
return of the Czar, and wanted a democratic government. They never
communicated with each other and received aid from other countries that was of
little help. After a three year span, 14 million Russians died and the Bolsheviks were
able to keep power and maintain it. Lenin the gives the name USSR to Russia. Which
then the Bolsheviks named a Communist party. Bolsheviks- radical socialists,
wanted to overthrow government and then, work to make Russia more
industrialized by authoritarian methods Communists- name adopted by Bolsheviks
Bread, Land, and Peace Slogan that Lenin used to get rid of Provisional
government, did not end Russias involvement in WWI, not redistribute land to
peasants, who had no land, help growing food shortage due to the war.
White army- People who fought the red army in the civil war.
Red army- Communists who fought the white army in the civil war
