Our Annotated Bibliography

This annotated bibliography has been created to spread awareness to the effects of
overcrowding. Overpopulation is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. It has impacted the
environment as well as the human race. The majority of the affected are particularly women and
children. There are multiple controversial problems like the lack of contraception distribution
and education among young women, the high death rates due to starvation in under developed
countries, and the environmental conflicts. There are many sides to the argument about how to
regulate the population. Although, this topic is uncomfortable to discuss, the fact of the manor is,
this issue will be the number one future problem. There needs to be enforced laws upon
distributing contraception and education to under developed countries and towards young
women to use them. Recognizing that more and more teens are becoming sexually active,
without using any form of protection, leaves this burden upon the rest of the population to pay
more in taxes to provide enough for these newborns. This concern is major in first world
countries because the employment rate will go high and not enough jobs will be provided for
everybody. The process of creating jobs will lead to deforestation in order to find the space
available for these people to provide for themselves and their families. Deforestation leads to
removing the habitats of endangered species and/or soon to be endangered species. Which leads
to more genetically modified organisms for the people to consume. The more people the less
homes and shelters for individuals to stay, which leads to an overabundance of people sleeping in
the local parks and streets. The homeless population will rise and providing the necessary
services for them will be impossible, therefore the death rates will increase in local areas. Also,
in one of the sources it will go in depth about how less fortunate families sleep in cemeteries
because they lack in finances and the necessities to survive. People need to be educated about the
effects of having an abundance of children. Half of them cannot afford to feed all those mouths,

and with more and more people being born, the risk of birth defects increases, as well as,
diseases created. There are higher risks of epidemics to erupt since the spread can bounce to
multiples of people, and therell be less opportunities for students to be accepted into colleges,
which leads to large amounts of stress to your mental health. China is known for their high rates
of suicide due to the pressure that their parents place upon them.
Campbell, Martha. "Why the Silence on Population?" Springer, 1 May 2007. Web. 23
Mar. 2015. <http://www.jstor.org/stable/27503995>.
Population has not been brought up in many political or religious conversations within
the past twenty five years and it is kept in silence since the United Nations International
Conference in 1994. During the 1960s and 1970s there was a lot of attention drawn to the rapid
growth of population. The rapid population growth has occurred since there is better water
conditions, improved nutrition, better hygiene and vaccines, basically new technology and
information. In the 1960s the worlds population was three billion and predictions have been
made that by 2050 the worlds population will grow by another three billion. Uganda, Nigeria,
Afghanistan, Asian, and Pakistan are bound to have a rapid population growth between the years
2006 through 2050. Due to the rapid growth, implications of water are occurring in large
countries. Many people believe that reducing fertility is necessary. However, it is not enough to
solve the problem. There is excellent evidence that, given the same level of health care, a child
born less than 18 months after an older sibling has a death rate two to four times that of a baby
born after a longer interval. In some cases like Northern countries, the problem is not human
population, but the amount of resources being used. According to Campbell, population is the
multiplier of everything we do and everything we consume. We need to consume less, but it is
actually easier to change family size than it is to change patterns of consumption. In places such

as Uganda the sheer scale of AIDS epidemic has caught a lot of the worlds attention. Many
people believe that spreading awareness is going to solve the problem, but in reality it is not
being as effective. This is a scholarly article that provides us with information not only through
writing but also provides graphs to show us how much population has been growing in the past
years. My opinion about this article is that many people dont consider how overpopulation is
becoming a problem or that the world is overpopulated. While reading this article I learned
several ways population can be controlled and how diseases are not helping reduce population.
"'It Boils down to the Government's Obsession with Population Quality' [Part 2]."
Interview by Leta H. Fincher. Shanghaiist Daily 14 Apr. 2014. Print.
For many years women have been undermined, especially in China. China suffers from
great overpopulation. Men are preferred over women. However, over the last couple of years
gender norms and equality are evolving, as the new generations come. When it comes to real
estate there is a lot of prejudice and gender inequality. One of the norms is that men are the head
of the house and they should be the ones supporting the family, which leads to women caring for
the family and not needing to own any type of property. It is believed that men need to have a
home in order to attract a bride. If couples never have the opportunity to conceive a son and only
conceive daughters in the attempt, they will go out of their way to by their nephew a house
instead of buying a house for their own daughter. Most homes are registered under the husbands
name. Even though women want economic independence they will never get it. The media has
become a propaganda machine to get the message across that women in their late 30s will not
find a husband because they are believed to be too old. Womens hopes are crushed due to
parents and elders having ancient believes, which impairs women. The propaganda campaign of
women leftover is giving out the message that women who are professional, educated, and

successful are too picky and are less likely to find a husband. It is believed that women who
dont marry are insecure, dont like sex and they are afraid of commitment. Women are delaying
marriage and even rejecting it. The Chinese government is trying to get educated women to
marry because they believe that this is the main use for women. However, illiterate women are
not encouraged to get married because they are classified as low quality women. Women labor
participation is decreasing dramatically due to government believing that women should return
to their homes and complete the simple function of caring for the family.
This shows how much women are still undermined to this day, even though we are in the
21st century. It has been said that women are more successful than men. I still dont understand
why men see successful women as a threat? Women can still be successful and have children.
However, I believe that it is good that educated women are not having children because the
environment is already suffering from overpopulation, especially China. I feel like women in
China are more overwhelmed due to parents and elders believing that the only use of women is
to give birth and care for the family. Therefore, this leads to women feeling insecure and
vulnerable. This seems reliable because Leta Hong Fincher is being interviewed on topics that
were written in her book.
"Advancing the Rights of Adolescent Girls Creates 'virtuous Cycle', Say Global Leaders."
Advancing the Rights of Adolescent Girls Creates 'virtuous Cycle', Say Global
Leaders. United Nations Population Fund, 9 Mar. 2015. Web. 01 Apr. 2015.
As we know many countries have are in great poverty, Guatemala is one of them. With
poverty there comes an increase of child birth rate. Many young women are becoming pregnant
due to being uneducated about resources. The United Nations Population Fund is investing in the
advancing of rights for adolescents. They are trying to put efforts towards the government

reducing adolescent pregnancies and improving education as well as protecting them from sexual
abuse. Adolescent pregnancy is jeopardizing their future by increasing the number of dropouts
within school. The fact that many adolescent girls are getting pregnant and experiencing sexual
abuse is looked upon with shame. There have been new standards for young women that have
been victims of sexual abuse such as considering rape if it under the age of 14 years old and the
case is to be persecuted. The government is also working on protecting girls right when it comes
to their health. There are programs that help pregnant girls to have health services and still
continue their education. Empowering young women is important because it brings positive
changes into their lives such as creating awareness for their freedom and their right to dignity.
This also leads to young women being informed and being able to stand up for themselves.
Reading this source made me happy in the way that there is help for young pregnant girls
in developing countries where there is more poverty and violence. In many developing countries
women are denied for any type of education and are made to believe that their only use is to care
for the family and have children. Knowing that actions are being taken to stop violence and rape
against women is a big step in a good direction. Also, I am happy about the fact that women are
becoming educated when it comes pregnancy because pregnancy can be planned and reduced. I
believe that this source is reliable because it gives an insight to women and education in
developing countries. It gives statistics and it gives the names of organizations.
Livingston, Gretchen, and D'Vera Cohn. "Childlessness Up Among All Women; Down
Among Women with Advanced Degrees." Pew Research Center's Social
Demographic Trends Project RSS. 24 June 2010. Web. 01 Apr. 2015.
Women that are educated do not have children. Recent data has presented that minority
women are the ones less likely to have children. Two years of data need to be combined and that

measure childlessness at the end of childbearing years to have an adequate sample for detailed
analysis. Over the past few years childlessness has become more accepting within the public.
Children have become less central when it comes to having a good marriage. Many scholars have
said that there is less pressure to have children. Instead, children are now seen like a personal
choice. Alternatives exist to having children such as job opportunities and contraceptive
methods. At a certain age women are no longer fertile and treatments no longer work. There are
equal numbers of women without children and women who cannot have children. Some women
who do not conceive their own children have alternative or being stepmothers or adopting.
Women with low education are now having fewer children. We would think that educated white
women are the ones not having children, but in reality Hispanic and black women are the ones
having fewer children.
This source seems credible because it has a lot of statistics such as rising share of
women having no children, women with no children, by educational attainment, 1992-94, and
2006-08, women with no children, by race and ethnicity, 1992-94 and 2006-08, women with no
children by marital status, 1992-94 and 2006-08, marital status of women with and without
children, 2006-08, educational attainment of women with and without children, 2008-08, and
lastly race and ethnicity of women with and without children, 2006-08. What interest me the
most was that Hispanic and black women who have are educated are less likely to have children.
Tresch, Matthew C. "A Balanced View of Motor Control." Nature Neuroscience 10.10
2007): 1227-228. Web. 02 Apr. 2015.
Balanced view is funded in Minnesota and it is an educational organization that informs
us about the benefit of stabilizing everyone. Our global population which was at 6.6 billion is
already two to three times higher than the sustainable level since earth is only able to support

resource wise 2 billion people at a European standard living. Europeans only use half the
resources us Americans use. To be able to create a sustainable earth we would have to reduce the
amount of birth rates lower than the amount of death rates so that human numbers decline. This
is obviously not something that is easy to do but in the future this will probably be the only
solution we have since we are running out of resources. According to this article, Currently the
6.6 billion of us are consuming about 25% more resources than Earth is producing during any
given time period. What many of us dont seem to think about is if we keep using up all the
sustainable resources around us then in the future the sustainable level is going to decline
causing harm to us and earth; our water usage is an example of this. David Paxon is a national
leader on population growth who speaks throughout the United States informing people about
population. This article claims that population reduction is the main issue that everyone should
be concerned about and everything else is subordinate. With this newsletter Tresch is trying to
convince people to join and help with the reducing of population movement and spread
awareness.
This is a credible source since it was published electronically and printed out through
local newspapers to spread out to the word. If it was not a credible source I do not believe the
author wouldve been able to spread awareness through both online and newspapers to try and
get as many people as he can to join the movement. My opinion about this newsletter is that its a
great way to advertise a change you want to see in the world and the organization, but if it is
done to grab someones attention and get them to join your movement Tresch should have made
it shorter and maybe include graphs to make it more interesting.
"United States Leads the World in Consuming Natural Resources | EMagazine.com." E
Magazine Print Issue. N.p., n.d. Web. 5 Apr. 2015.

A child being born in the U.S causes more problems to the earth and its population since
it consumes more than what a child would in a developed country. A child born in the United
States will create thirteen times as much ecological damage over the course of his or her lifetime
than a child born in Brazil, reports the Sierra Clubs Dave Tilford. Most Americans will use up
as many resources as we can just because we are very needy and dont know how to cut back
from our habits; the more we see the more we want. According to this article Americans are less
likely to feel back about using up most of the resources and are the ones that believe that oneself
can change the world but yet nobody is changing their habits. The United States alone has less
than five percent of the world population yet we consume most of the oil, coal, aluminum, and
copper. An average American is known to consume about what 35 natives in India consume of
natural resources and 53 time more goods and services than a person from China. These statistics
show how Americans arent really limited to the amount of resources we are provided with
compared to others living in poor countries. We dont see the problem now in the United States
but we will in the near future and it will be too late to cut back on the amount of resources we
use.
My opinion about this article is that it gives great statistics about how Americans tend to
use up more resources than what we really need and we are being compared to other developing
countries such as India and China. This article is a credible source because it is from a science
magazine and is written by scientist that have studied this topic. Before reading this article I
knew that the average American consumed more than a person living in a developed country but
after seeing those statistics about how much more we consume makes me realize how much we
really have to change our consumption habits of natural resources.
"Choose Your Future | EMagazine.com." E Magazine Print Issue. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 Apr.

2015.
When most of us think about our future we may think about electronics, and how much
technology will increase, and our economy. Not many of us think about how earth may be
damaged and unsustainable, especially in the United States. According to the authors of
Emagazine, Though it holds less than 5% of the global population, Americans use nearly of
quarter of the worlds fossil fuel resources and each American uses on average 168 pounds of
resources per day, taking into account everything from food to fuels to plastics and metals. The
author explain that in the year 2100 earth is estimated to have gone through serious climate
change affecting cities that will soon be lost either by rising sea levels or wetlands. In order for
us to live in a sustainable world by 2100, we will have to reduce the amount of car usage
tremendously, get rid of fossil fuels, and food transportation. There will be a series of events that
will lead to a decrease in human population such as another depression which the author in this
news magazine calls it the Great Depression.
This news magazine is a credible resource because it explains how the world is not and
how it is most likely going to be in the future if we do not start making changes now. The author
claims that the world is going to change by 2100 because there is going to be major events such
as cities vanishing, another depression that will eventually lead to a smaller population and
create a sustainable world. My opinion about this article is that the author explains his/her
thoughts thoroughly but does not explain how we are supposed to get there? The world is not
going to suddenly change, I think these ideas should have been explain more. I do agree with the
fact that Americans are very needy and are using up most of the natural resources harming the
world, but it is very hard to change someones consuming habits.

The first major population growth milestone was in the 1800s when population reached 1
billion people on this earth in less than 100 years it reached 2 billion and then people started to
argue that we cannot support this many people.
Across the world, even in countries like Bangladesh, families of just two children are
now the norm meaning that within a few generations, the population explosion will be over. A
smaller proportion of people now live in extreme poverty than ever before in human history and
the United Nations has set a target of eradicating it altogether within a few decades. In these
communities large families are praised, but a new shift is happening to have smaller families and
to have better plans.
Brings up the idea that although there is too many people in the world there is are always
going to be older or old people that are going to pass away and make room for the new children
coming into the world. It is possible to have this many people in the world, but should we have
this many people realistically no it is impossible to provide the resources to sustain this many
people.
Credible because it shows proof of how the world is changing. It is gives examples from
surveys and these surveys are done over a long periods of times to get more accurate results. This
is also a credible sources because it is a BBC documentary and these are in-depth documentaries
that look into issues from around the world. Hans Rosling is a world famous medical doctor,
academic, statistician and public speaker.

The next one discuss that overpopulation has less to do with raw numbers of people than
their relationships with the planets sustainable resources. This article is my independent media
source and it discuss the general thoughts of overpopulation. Thill the author has had some
experience in writing scientific article he use humor to make the article a bit more interesting.
This article brings up the idea that the earth can sustain this many people it can reach 10 million
billion people if we want to be and the earth could sustain us.
"The world is much more interconnected now than any time in history this is not only because of
technology, but also because our per-capita energy, water, land, forest and other natural resource
use is linked around the globe. America is particularly important: While we represent just five
percent of the global population, we contribute 25 percent of the planet's energy use and carbon
dioxide emissions. So our role in global climate change is disproportionately large; so should be
our responsibilities for curbing it."
The main point was that we might be overpopulating the world, but we have the
resources to keep us alive and sustain us. This source is useful because it always a good idea to
see what the counter argument is to see if it helps shape your belief in anyway. It is credible
because it has some valid point such as the rat theory which is that rat can sustain themselves
with the resources that are provided to hem and they live in large numbers as well. This article is
trying to show the counter side of the agreement it brings up other issues such as abortion and
that the population would be large if there was less abortion. The idea of population control is
tricky one.

How many of us actually know how many people there are in the world today? For the
most part many of us would say that there is a couple billion. Well if we wanted to be exact it
would be near to 8 billion people on the earth and that number is soon to reach those 8 billion
and surpass it in a matter of years. This article for the most part is raising public awareness on a
big issue that we face today. Overpopulation! The idea that the world is getting too crowded is
not a new one as a matter of fact it been around for quite some years now. Overpopulation like
many environmental issues is cause by one species humans. Humans are the cause of
overpopulation, but overpopulation is a much harder issue to deal. Overpopulation has so many
other factors that make it one of the most uncomfortable issues to talk about. My article bring up
the simple idea of this The Earths too crowded, so better family planning may be humanitys
last hope to save us from ourselves. This quote in my opinion gives the reader a good sense of
what the overall idea of this article is. The overall idea that this article is trying to make is that in
order to help save the earth we must take the necessary steps when it comes to planning a family.
It is credible because I found it in the scholarly articles in the Meriam library and it
writers were creditable one is a demographer specializing in demographic analysis and
population projection. It is also creditable because it published thru the NCBI which stands for
the national center for biotechnology information it is a .gov runned website. This article was
also recently written in 2011.
Likte, Mark. Amid Population Explosion, Birth Control Access Roils the Philippnes.
PBS. PBS, n.d. Web. 29 March.

The impact that birth control access can have on a population. I had a clue before even
beginning this research that birth control access played a huge role in population. Not all
religions believe in birth control and many simply cant afford it. I am interested in the effect that
no birth control has on the United States but it was interesting to see the dramatic effect it had the
Philippines. In one hospital there were 40 births in just 12 hours. That is crazy! This country is
one that is densely populated with Catholics. Catholics do not believe in contraceptive so they
continue to have kids until their bodies physically cant anymore. Many families are so large and
poor that the young children are digging in trash cans looking for food or something to sell. You
would think it would be easier to simply not have so many kids right? This same country is so
over populates some families seek shelter in the cemetery. This documentary gives a great look
at what it is like in the Philippines being so overpopulated. I can use this source to compare how
not having access to birth control in America differs from not having birth control in another
country.
Comes from the PBS newshour. It is a .org so we were taught that .orgs were always
more trustworthy than .coms. The PBS newshour also has some credibility attached to it. I also
find this this source helpful because it allows comments which can be helpful when trying to get
complete understanding. You also recommended this website to look at so I know it is credible.
Cook, Thomas. "Too Many Children? The Ethics of Population Control." Quodlibet
Journal. N.p., n.d. Web. 31 Mar. 2015.
It focuses more on America and birth control. Refers to birth control as population
control but I believe it to be meaning the same thing. It discusses the ethical views behind trying

to get women to have less children. It also mentions how it is minority women that America
would like to stop having so many kids. Discusses different views on procreation according to
the bible. It gives four different views to all of the parts. It gives a procreation view, symmetric
view, optimist view, and a pessimist view. The key part is discussing whether or not population
control is ethical or if it devalues children. I personally think it doesnt. If anything I think it adds
value to the children we already have.
it is credible because it comes from a pretty popular journal. It also includes its own
bibliography with a list of sources from which it gathered its information. That is helpful because
I can go back and look at those for information as well. We were taught to look for articles that
had other credible sources in them to use as other forms of information.
"Hobby Lobby Contraceptive Case Goes Before Supreme Court." NPR. NPR, n.d. Web.
05 Apr. 2015.
s-before-supreme-court>.
This is focused on the owner of chain of stores, Hobby Lobby, and its employees. Most
employers offer insurance and the insurance includes birth control for the women regardless of
the owners beliefs. This chain s different in the fact that the owner made it so the employees are
not offered birth control as a part their insurance packet. Hobby Lobby has received a lot of press
over whether or not this is fair or even ethical. The hobby lobby owner refuses to offer
contraceptives because of biblical beliefs. This interview could help me a lot as merely on
example of religion playing a role in overpopulation. Im not in any way saying that religious
beliefs is the sole cause for overpopulation but it is clearly a factor and this interview gives an

example of how. Hobby Lobby doesnt control all women and whether or not they have access to
birth control but it does play a role in whether or not thousands of women do.
This is a valid source because it comes from a well-known and respected site, NPR. This
site is a .org so of course we were taught to trust those. This source is different from other
sources I have gathered because it is something that recently happened and was up for discussion
at the Supreme Court. This is the first recent and relevant news story I have come across that is
in the US. I have come across lots of other cases having to do with women going without birth
control due to religious reasons but none were as recent as this.
Pogge, Thomas. World Poverty and Human Rights. 2nd ed. Cambridge: Polity Press,
2008. Print.
Contains nine essays that have a certain stance on global justice. These essays were
written from 1990 to 2007. Explains that in chapters one to three there are philosophical themes
including discussions about universal justice, human rights, and moral theorizing. The chapters
in between three and five, show the moral acceptance of the existing global order being
incompatible with moral convictions about interpersonal morality and domestic justice. Chapters
six to nine, they propose reforms that would better align our international order with our moral
convictions. They pointed out that the worlds poverty problems are only a tiny issue
economically. They brought estimations of those highly affected by the overpopulation by
stating:
830 million human beings are chronically undernourished, 1,100 million lack access to
safe water, 2,600 million lack access to basic sanitation, 1,000 million lack adequate

shelter, and 1,600 million lack electricity. About 2,000 million lack access to essential
drugs, some 774 adults are illiterate, and there are 218 million child laborers.
These estimations are believed to still be severely deprived of to this day, due to the fact,
that these people live more in the worlds bottom half of the population grid and are unable to
protect themselves against them because they live in poverty. People living poverty tend to be
more vulnerable even towards minor changes. They are the ones greatly affected and unable to
adjust when the world decides to transform. Every year there are estimates of eighteen million
people dying prematurely from poverty-related causes. In other words, around fifty thousand
deaths happen each day because of those trapped in poverty. They pointed out that the rich get
richer while as the poor remain or fall below the subsistence minimum.
The author of this book is a philosopher and the Director of the Global Justice Program.
He is also a Leitner Professor of Philosophy and International Affairs at Yale University. He has
carefully organized these essays to fit perfectly with my main topic, population rights. His
estimations shows the cruelty that large corporations place on these underdeveloped countries.
His arguments are very eye opening to the fact that the world is continuing to prosper and grow,
but these people in poverty are stuck and dying off. These people are constantly trying to grow,
and yet they are unsuccessful. In these underdeveloped countries, it is normal to produce an
abundance of children. The fact is, most of them will die young and the rest are needed to
contribute money, food, etc. to the family. Realizing their struggles makes me aware of how
selfish my wanting and needs have been. I would never want my family to experience povertyrelated situations because once you are poor it is a struggle getting out.

Discussed many interesting topics about how the Earth's population has nearly doubled in
100 years. William Ryerson of The Population Institute says overpopulation is real and offers
solutions. Also, more than four years after the 2008 financial meltdown, the big banks that
caused the crisis are behaving as before, taking big risks and hiding the facts from investors and
the public. It starts off by acknowledging the very generous volunteers who provided the
homeless with free flu shots, dental care, clothes, housing opportunities, food, haircuts, etc. The
program is created to aid those unable to gain the necessary tools to survive. The idea helped
build up a particular form to create a homeless permanent shelter. Many homeless people are
very thankful and eager for the shelter to be open for them. The president of the city council,
Todd Gloria put together this entire project to show the locals of San Diego that we should look
out for one another instead of watching them die off on the streets. Also, the issue of immigration
stirred up and a young man named, Adrian Florido, who is arguing for a better way to allow
immigrants access to agricultural jobs. He proposed to give them visa cards to cross the border
and work in these farms, but they must return in order to continue working there. There are lots
of controversial issues revolving around this idea. However, the immigration reform will make
finding labor difficult for farmers. In reality there are around 11 million undocumented people
living in the U.S., and we are still trying to aid those wanting to cross over for jobs.
The topics they discussed revolved around the population expanding today and how we
are treating them. The fact is, the government is letting the homeless die off to solve this
overpopulation issue. It is up to the people to raise the awareness that they matter and we should
regulate some laws to allow them to get out of their struggle. The difference between being
homeless and living in poverty is you have resources to pull you out of your pit of struggles.

Connor, Steve. Overpopulation 'is main threat to planet'. The Independent. 30 March
2015. Web. 7 January 2006.
Climate change and global pollution cannot be effectively tackled without addressing the
neglected issue of the world's booming population. According to two leading scientists, Professor
Chris Rapley, director of the British Antarctic Survey, and Professor John Guillebaud, vented
their frustration yesterday at the fact that overpopulation had fallen off the agenda of the many
organizations dedicated to saving the planet. The scientists believed dealing with the growing
human population of the planet was vital if real progress was to be made on the other enormous
problems facing the world. They also vented, "It is the elephant in the room that nobody wants to
talk about and unless we reduce the human population humanely through family planning, nature
will do it for us through violence, epidemics or starvation" (Professor Guillebaud p. 1). He
elaborated why he decided to study the field of human reproduction more than 40 years ago. The
answer revolved around specifically the overcrowding because of the problems he envisaged
through overpopulation. His concerns were echoed by Professor Rapley, an expert on the effects
of climate change on the Antarctic, who pointed out that this year an extra seventy-six million
people would be added to the six-point-five billion already living on Earth, which is twice as
many as in nineteenth sixty. The worlds population needed to be reduced by nearly two-thirds if
climate change was to be prevented. Therefore, everyone on the planet can easily calm down in
order to enjoy a lifestyle similar to that of Europeans. Humanity has slowly started exploiting
about 20 per cent more renewable resources than can be replaced each year. Professor
Guillebaud stated the reality of how it would require the natural resources equivalent to four
more Planet Earths to sustain the projected 2050 population of nine billion people.

This independent media is credible because the publisher is the Science Editor for The
Independent and graduated from the University of Oxford. His interests are human and
evolution. This relates to the topic of regulating the overpopulation in order to solve other
problematic issues. If you can create laws to handle to expansion, then you remove a weight off
your shoulder. By the time 2050 comes around, I will be in my fifties and the population issue
will most likely be regulated like they did in China. I hope they do not force the amount of
children you can bear.
Kick, Edward L., Randa Nasser, Byron L. Davis, and Lee Bean. MILITARIZATION
AND INFANT MORTALITY IN THE THIRD WORLD. Journal of Political
& Military Sociology 18.2 (1990): 285-305. SocIndex. Web. 29 Mar. 2015.
There is a lot of infant mortality in third world countries and it has always been grievously
high in the third world. Infant mortality rates in the third world have declined since World War
II, however, Gwatkin (1979, 1980) has observed that the rate of decrease in infant mortality has
slackened in the past three decades. Further in 1985, the average infant mortality rate of the
worlds developing countries was 79 per 1000 live births while in the most developed countries
only 14 in 1000 children died before the age of one (Sivard 1989). It explained that theres a
correlation between infant mortalities and militarization in the third world countries. The
disturbing trend in infant mortality in the third world coincides with a phenomenal increase in
domestic militarization, including the proliferation of military regimes and armaments imported
from developed nations. The article then went on to give an example which stated that only
seven percent of the worlds military expenditures were attributed to the third world in 1960
while in 1985 its share has risen to nearly twenty percent. This article taught me that studies have

recognized the crucial role played by public health factors and key determinants of infant
mortality pointed to the negative impact of militarization on infant mortality.
Im pretty sure this article is credible considering I found it while using the school librarys
database. They have peer reviewed articles that are credible throughout the database. At the end
of the article it gives credit to other authors and sources meaning that these authors did a lot of
research for this issue and they gave credit where its due. This volume also came from a credible
journal.

Offers information on population problems to people of a certain age and he refers to
them as population bomb and population explosion he talks about the complex challenges of
todays population issues and ways people respond to it, including the population reference
bureau. The author starts the article by explaining when overpopulation began to occur
(population explosion), which was around the time of the cold war. So for at least a century,
every generation of Americans has seen some aspect of population as a problem. Each problem
was based in hard numbers. Each generated private emotions and public fears. Each suffered
exaggeration and manipulation. And each commanded the attention of opinion leaders and
elected officials. He stated that the growth of population was accompanied by crowding,
malnutrition, disease, and poverty.
This source is credible because the author is worthy of his word. Bill Butz is the president
of his organization which is the population reference bureau. The population reference bureau is

run to explain to people all of the issues that come along with population particularly in
developing countries, they also are finding out different ways to respond to challenges that come
along with population. This is also a credible source because it is a .org website.
Kuo, Gioietta. "Megacrisis? Overpopulation Is The Problem." World Future Review
(World Future Society) 4.3 (2012): 23-32. Academic Search Premier. Web. 30

Deals with the prediction of overpopulation becoming a global problem. The global
problem it addresses are water and food scarcity, climate change, and poverty. The crisis can
bring forth a global recession followed by environmental destruction. The unemployment rate
would increase dramatically, and the young adults would not be able to grasp jobs at a young
age. The problem would bring a period of starvation and turmoil. The article acknowledges both
pros and cons of overpopulation. The article described the seventh billion child born on October
11, 2011, and how the UN found this birth a huge global problem. The issue is that the world
cannot possibly put nine billion people on the planet, as the UN predicts, because our agriculture
and water resources are already insufficient to meet the needs of the present global population of
seven billion. It brought up the fact that already one billion people are at the starvation level. One
of the subheadings was the idea of reducing population for humanitys sake. It shows how
Chinas government made a draconian policy to allow only one-child-per-family in order to
reduce the population growth. The more people added to the population the more demands for
resources. That problem can create a lack in necessities for survival, as well as an instant
increase in death rates. The authors of this article are hoping for the advancement of technology
to continue progressing.

The author of the article is a research physicist at the French Atomic Energy Commission
in Paris, France. She has many years in the scientific research at Princeton University. It relates
to my topic because in reality, the more advanced we are technical, the better our government
would be operated. Another situation to address is capitalism and how it is based on the
impossible goal of continuous economic growth. For growth, we need to use more and more
energy, more and more resources, and to continually expand markets, not only by grabbing more
and more potential customers, but also persuading them that they need more and more
possessions and services. And yet we are in a bounded system. At some stage that growth has to
level off. And it looks as though right now we are very near the limit set by natural systems and
resources.
Cafaro, Phillip. Crist, Eileen. Life on the Brink: Environmentalists Confront
Overpopulation. 2012. Print.
Aspires to reignite a vigorous discussion of population issues among environmentalists,
environmental studies scholars, policymakers, and the general public. Some of the leading voices
in the American environmental movement restate the case that population growth is a major
force behind many of our most serious ecological problems, including global climate change,
habitat loss and species extinctions, air and water pollution, and food and water scarcity. As we
exceed seven billion world inhabitants, contributors argue that ending population growth
worldwide and in the United States is a moral imperative that deserves renewed commitment.
Addresses two fundamental problems. Those problems are population explosion and the
expectation of perpetual growth in per capita consumption. These two problems would not only
affect the several billion poor people, but for the billion or so who are known for living rich
lifestyles. Acknowledges the issue that humans are constantly evolving their relationship with

Earth in order to be at a certain balance with Mother Nature. The more overcrowding, the more
we seek housing and food.
These resources will put humans into a downfall because the space they require for
housing means that trees and plants need to be destroyed for the residents to move in and have
shelter. We always overly abuse Mother Nature as if she was some caring giving tree with no
sense of revenge. The chapter calls to mind the reality of overtaking. In other words, we humans
kill off animals for ourselves and deforest tons of woods to provide more jobs and/or homes.
Humans are depicted as selfish living organisms because when they take away animals habitat
and food they are left to suffer, and most humans pay no attention to them. Ocean life has been
greatly affected by humans. The results of the CO2 emissions being released and captured by the
oceans causes a devastating turn out for the coral reef homes.

Discussed many interesting topics about how the Earth's population has nearly
doubled in 100 years. William Ryerson of The Population Institute says overpopulation is real
and offers solutions. Also, more than four years after the 2008 financial meltdown, the big banks
that caused the crisis are behaving as before, taking big risks and hiding the facts from investors
and the public.

This video is from a trusted website. The topics they discussed revolved around the
population expanding today and how we are treating them. The fact is, the government is letting
the homeless die off to solve this overpopulation issue. It is up to the people to raise the
awareness that they matter and we should regulate some laws to allow them to get out of their
struggle. The difference between being homeless and living in poverty is you have resources to
pull you out of your pit of struggles.

Women's Rights. [Web Blog]. Pulitzer Center.
Retrieved from: http://pulitzercenter.org/blog/ken-weiss-overpopulation-contraceptionhunger-food-reproductive-rights
Predicts that in 2050 the world will have over 9 billion people living on this
planet. The ones who added ninety-seven percent into this population boom would be those
living in poor underdeveloped countries. She brings in a man by the name, Ken Weiss, to share
his experiences about overpopulation, hunger, and womens rights. His experiences are mainly
curtained around the fact that many women want to use contraception to prevent having kids. For
instance, there was a 16-year-old teen with his 15-year-old wife, who decided to stop having kids

after their second son, despite the pressure of their families to produce more. There was the
woman in Africa who has six children and in want of contraception. The issue is contraception
tends to be lacked as a necessity for young women. In the U.S. we are experiencing major
teenage pregnancies, although the contraception is offered. In Netherlands, they have provided
sex education early for young women and men to prevent pregnancies. The idea is to force the
education upon men and women so they have a general idea of what not to do. Offering family
planning will solve another issue, world hunger. By enforcing laws and regulations upon women
to use contraception we solve world hunger. In other words, families are able to feed their
children without worrying about not having enough for themselves. They pointed out hunger
deaths exceeding fatalities from AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. A child dies of
hunger every eleven seconds. The solutions is to fix up the distribution of contraception and
necessities needed for survival with more laws in order to save lives.
The publisher is a graduate of Oberlin College, who studied geology and English,
and writes for the Pulitzer Center. She is an alumni and the website is a .org. this blog relates to
the laws of regulating the overcrowding. It provided a solution that can kill two birds with one
stone. That being distribute and enforce contraception upon young women until they are at the
legal age to have babies, and the other is world hunger. I would not mind being forced to take a
contraception if I was sexually active. Many young teens are being sexually active and are not
being careful, therefore they create life and have no way to support the child.
