G1.1 Artifact: Lesson Plan

G1.2 Artifact: Pictures of Implemented Common Core Lesson
Although I have noticed that many teachers base their curriculum on their book or
on the curriculum as it was when they started teaching, I have always looked to
adhere to the standards that California expects science teachers to adhere to. In my
particular district, those are the NGSS standards or Next Generation Science
Standards. Artifact 1.1 is a partially complete unit plan that offers a look into how I
began planning every unit by analyzing the standards so that every lesson in the
unit ties specifically to the science that California wants its teachers to teach.
Artifact 1.1 makes it clear that the standards are the basis behind everything that
happens during the unit.
But the NGSS arent the only standards that science teachers are responsible for.
We are also responsible, as every teacher is, for the CCSS or Common Core State
Standards, which have various standards aimed at multimodal learning for students
in the form of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Artifact 1.2 shows the
written and draw portion of student work for a lesson that incorporated all four
aspects of the CCSS. The assignments specifically incorporates standard RST 2
which states that students must be able to Determine the central idea or
conclusions of a text and Provide an accurate summary of the text distinct from
prior knowledge or opinions.
