SOL 2.8 Comprehension

Objective: The student will be able to demonstrate comprehension after reading the story by
retelling the 5 components of a 5 finger retell: character, setting, problem, events, ending.
Activity: Begin reading Ruby the Red Fairy on the iPad in Storia, keeping in mind the five
elements of a 5 finger retell while reading.
Materials: iPad, 5 Finger Retell chart
Procedure:
1. Revisit the 5 Finger Retell chart and explain that these are the 5 elements of all good
stories.
2. Ask some pre-reading comprehension questions: Who were the main characters in the last
Rainbow Fairies book? What is a vacation? How are rainbows made?
3. Have the student read the story aloud (at least the first 4 pages) do the writing activity at
the end to recall components of the story.

Objective: The student will be able to write a story (of at least 5 pages) that includes the
important elements of a story (character, setting, problem, events, ending) using an app on the
iPad called StoryKit.
Activity: Finish filling drafting the 5 page pre-write and begin writing (text first) the story using
the iPad.
Materials: Writing utensil, pre-write sheet from last session, iPad.
Procedure:
1. Have the student use the components from the 5 Finger Retell she created a few sessions ago
to fill out a graphic organizer and plan the 5 pages of the story.
2. Begin composing text for each page on the iPad using StoryKit.
3. If time allows begin adding illustrations.

2.7 Expand vocab while reading

Objective: The student will be able to identify and copy down at least three adjectives and
descriptive words the author used to tell the story.
Activity: Have Eva re-read the second half of The Fairies Birthday Surprise and keep an eye out
for details that make the story descriptive that she might be able to replicate in her own story.
Materials: iPad
Procedure:
1. Briefly discuss visualization techniques that authors use and descriptive words
(adjectives).
2. Have Eva reread the second half of the book on the iPad, keeping her own story that we
will be writing later in mind.
3. On a page of the students choice, use the picture and come up with three words each to
describe it.
4. Share lists with each other and make a sentence using one of the other persons adjectives.

Word Work
SOL 2.4 Oral identification and manipulation of units of speech sounds within words.
2.5 Phonetic strategies when reading and writing
Objective: The student will be able to manipulate letters to form new words and recognize
similarities and patterns in words.
Activity: Making words from the letters RAINBOW FAIRIES and recording them on a separate
sheet of paper into groups
Materials: Cut out letters, writing utensil, paper
Procedure:
1. Introduce the activity by telling the student we will be the following letters to make words and
then we will be grouping them by similarities.
3. Model by making the word RAN and seeing if Eva can change one letter to make it into a
new word. See if the student can make a word that would be grouped with RAN.
4. Have the student make at least five words and record them on the paper.
5. If time allows, create complete sentences with some of the words the student created.
