LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE
Establishing the Lesson Framework
NETS-S: 1. Creativity and Innovation (b) Students demonstrate creative
thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes
using technology.
TEKS: Computer Science 5(A) Digital citizenship. The student explores and
understands safety, legal, cultural, and societal issues relating to the use of
technology and information.
TEKS: Computer Science 6(B) Technology operations and concepts. The
student understands technology concepts, systems, and operations.
Applicable Student Expectations:
Students will be expected to create original works as a means of personal
or group expression.
Students will be expected to explain copyright laws/issues and model
ethical acquisition of digital information.
Students will be expected to use operating system tools, including
appropriate file management.
Objective: TLW define intellectual property vocabulary words then use them to
identify patents, copyrights, and trademarks found in everyday life. TLW will then
create a political cartoon utilizing appropriate online resources to demonstrate
understanding of the concepts.
Rationale: Learning the importance of protecting intellectual property is critical
to promoting innovation within our society. Students must learn how to protect
their ideas and concepts while also learning how to give credit to others when
they are utilizing their materials.

Setting
Desks will be arranged in groups of 3.
Instructions for the warm-up (preassessment survey) will be on the
projector and students will begin the survey immediately.
Activity 1 will be completed as a class
Activities 2 and 3 will be completed in their groups of 3.
Student Needs/Adaptations
Prior Knowledge:
Students must be familiar with the computer and how to access certain
websites.
Adaptations:
Visual aids will be provided for vocabulary terms (such as the copyrighted
book)
Cooperative grouping with varying knowledge levels
Highlighters provided to aid in visualizing terms
Word bank, sentence starters/enders, and/or hints provided on
vocabulary handout
Instructional Strategies:

Introduction/Focus:
Do Now:
o Ask students to ponder the question If you create a piece of music,
do you own it?
o Have them discuss it with their group members for 1-2 minutes
Play the video clip Hip Hop Sampling: Theft or Tribute?
Briefly discuss the video and explain the objective: We will be discussing
intellectual property and why its important to protect it.
Instructional Procedure:
Activity 1 Lets Talk IP!
Pass out the handout of vocabulary terms
Give students about 5 minutes to discuss the vocabulary with their group
and come up with possible definitions.
Go through each vocabulary term, defining it on the smartboard (or iPad
using Doceri), and showing a visual of each term.
Activity 2 Whats in the Bag?
Pass out one handout and one mystery IP bag to each group of 3.
Explain to the students that they will be classifying each mystery item
into the copyright, patent, or trademark category.
Once each item is categorized, students will give a brief explanation as to
why they chose that category.
Give students approxiametely 15 minutes to complete this activity.
Activity 3 Cartoon Creation
Explain to students that they will be creating a cartoon/comic strip that
conveys the idea of todays lesson.
They will work with their groups to brainstorm ideas and choose which
online tool to use.
The three options they have to choose from are:

Closure:
Students will present their cartoons/comic strips to the class
Class will end with a discussion and reflection on the real world
applications of intellectual property.
Evaluation Strategies
Pre- Assessment: Students will complete a brief survey as a warm-up when they
come into class. The survey will be online either through Google Docs or the
schools learning management platform.

Formative:
