CHE522/CPE523 (TRANSPORT PHENOMENA)

ASSIGNMENT 1
1. Explain the boundary conditions used in momentum transport for fluid-solid, liquidgas and liquid-liquid interfaces.
2. Consider the steady-state, laminar flow of a fluid of constant density and viscosity
in an inclined tube of length L, radius R and angle with reference to vertical plane.
The liquid flows downward in z-direction under the influence of a pressure difference
and gravity. Assume that the tube length be very large with respect to tube radius.
(a) Derive the following velocity distribution of the fluid, vz as a function r using
equation of motion and momentum shell balance equation. State all your
assumptions.

(b) A Newtonian liquid has a kinematic viscosity of 9 x 10 -3 m2/s and density

0.75 x 102 kg/m3. It is flowing through a 40 metal tube with 1.5 m long and 0.5 m
inside diameter under a pressure difference of 50 N/m2. Determine the maximum
velocity of the liquid using velocity profile in part (a).
3. Glycerol is a Newtonian fluid, and the viscosity of glycerol is 1.069 Pas. If glycerol is
sheared in the apparatus that Newton used (drawn schematically below) at a shear rate
(shear rate = dvz/dy) of 1.5 s-1, what is the value of the shear stress yz that will be
generated? Please give your answer in Pa.

(a) Derive the velocity distribution of the fluid, vz as a function y using equation of
motion and momentum shell balance equation. State all your assumptions.

4. Consider the flow depicted in the schematic below. Flow takes place
in the narrow space between two very wide and very long plates.

The flow i driven by an imposed pressure, which is higher upstream

(P ) than a distance L downstream (P ). The flow is steady, well
developed, and we are considering the region only far from all
edges. The fluid is an incompressible, Newtonian fluid. For full credit
you will need to correctly indicate the assumptions you used in
arriving at your answers.
