The Goddard School is a high priced education center; therefore most families
who attend The Goddard School are middle to upper socioeconomic status. The Goddard
School has a strong Parents Teacher Organization (PTO) and the organization raises
money for the school, different fundraisers, and other special events.
In each classroom, the students use Smartboards for whole group activities, there
are four computers for individualized work, 1 iPad that is used with teacher direction, and
3 sets of earphones with CD players to help promote language and reading skills.
Students complete daily activities on the Smartboard such as morning calendar, weather,
story time, and various math, and language art activities. The students in each class also
use the computers daily to complete individual math activities and mazes. Students may
use the iPads once a week to look at small educational YouTube videos. In all the
classrooms, students use headphones and CD player to listen to different genres of music,
listening to stories, and the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten use the headphones and
CD player with read-a-longs.
Vision Statement
In each classroom, there are useful technologies that spike the students interest
and keep them engaged. However, more can be done. Teachers can broaden the activities
and experiments students can do in the classroom by researching more applications for
the Smartboard, using the iPad three to fours times a week, and researching more
software that could be used on the computer. Having at least 5 iPads will be more
beneficial to the students because the ipads can be used more often to use as a center.
Exposing students to different types of technologies will help students become more
proficient when using the technologies and have the students will become more
successful in the classroom.
Students will use iPads more frequently in the classroom so the students can start
learning how to collect and record data during simple experiments. When comparing and
contrasting, the students will learn how to develop basic graphic organizers and venndiagrams to organize ideas. Students will use the computer daily for at least 30 minutes a
day to complete small writing task and to help understand basic learning skills. Students
will use the Smartboard to complete whole group interactive activities and projects that
the teachers create.

activities. Students will be able to collect data during science experiments and create
Venn-diagrams while discussing similarities and differences of a topic. This technology
will allow students to work independently and/or in groups. This also allows students to
gain knowledge on how to properly use the iPad. Having a protective case around the
iPad will guarantee the iPad lasting longer and it will teacher students that they need to
use gentle hands when working with that technology.
CD players and headphones have always been around to help students listen and
read-a-long to stories. This is an important step when students are learning how to read.
I want to increase the number of CD players and headphones so students will have a
literacy center during the day. Having this center open will allow students to work on
letter sounds, proper pronunciation, and reading skills. This center will be great for
individualized work with minimum teacher guidance. The CD players also have an
adapter for iPhones/iPods so it is possible to put e-books and music on iPods/iPhone as
well.
There are already 4 computers with Internet access in each classroom. For the
size of the classrooms and the other technologies used, 4 computers is enough. However,
I want to increase the use of the computers. Instead of computer games and coloring
pages, I want the students to focus their learning more on proper and safe internet use,
typing, and for the older classrooms (PreK and K), small writing samples. Having
students learn how to type at a young age will allows students to become more efficient
in the future. Having students create small writing samples will allow students to become
more creative by telling small stories and/or their opinion about a certain topic.
Timeline
I will begin donations and funding in the beginning of the 2014-2015 school
years. Throughout the year, I will ask for donations from the state of Maryland, PTO,
and research different technology grants that companies offer schools. I will also involve
the parents asking for small donations throughout the year to help our school become
more involved with different technologies. Students can also create bake sales and/or
different fundraisers to help the school receive money for assistive technology in the
school.
By the end of the school 2014-2015, I want to have all the technologies ready so
teachers can start training. I would also like to have all technologies up and running with
minimum flaws so our students can benefit early with these updated technologies. Before
the school year starts, teachers will go through a 5-hour training to get acquainted with
the different technologies that the school received. Teachers will also create a couple
practice lessons on the Smartboard with the new software, SMART Notebook.
opportunities.
Create different fundraisers to get the
student population involved the help with
bringing updated technologies within the
school.
Calculate the money raised, and start
Evaluation
I will ask for progress reports from the team every month. We will not test our
students but we will observe the students and how well they are getting comfortable using
the technologies daily. I will also ask the teachers how well the SMART Notebook
software is handling in the classrooms and if the interactive technology is helping
students become more engaged.
The preschool, prekindergarten, and kindergarten staff will save all writing
samples that students write on the computer. We will observe to see if there is any
improvement from passed writing samples that where done with pencil and pen (are there
any improvements with grammar, spelling, creativity, etc). Staff will also take note on
how well each student does using the computer.
Teachers will orally test the students by asking the students to explain the
different parts of the computer (monitor, screen, keyboard, mouse, etc.). Teachers will
also discuss with the students that they need to use gentle hands when using the
computer (ex. no banging on the keyboard, and/or hitting the computer). All evaluations
that the teachers give will be observation based and discussed as a team during bimonthly meetings.
