Learn how to access a document on Edmodo
Use the document to do online research
Present findings to the class
Submit work on the Edmodo platform
NETS-S Standards and National Ocean Literacy Standards
NETS-S 2 Communication and collaboration
Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively,
including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of
others.
3. Research and information fluency
Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.
b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a
variety of sources and media
d. Process data and report results
4. Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making
Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects,
solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and
resources.
a. Identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation
6. Technology operations and concepts
Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and
operations.
a. Understand and use technology systems
b. Select and use applications effectively and productively
Ocean Literacy Essentials
Essential Principle 7-The ocean is largely unexplored.

Fundamental Concept a.
The ocean is the last and largest unexplored place on
Earthless than 5% of it has been explored. This is the great frontier for the next
generations explorers and researchers, where they will find great opportunities for
inquiry and investigation.
Fundamental Concept b.
Understanding the ocean is more than a matter of curiosity.
Exploration, inquiry and study are required to better understand ocean systems and
processes.
Fundamental Concept d.
New technologies, sensors and tools are expanding our
ability to explore the ocean. Ocean scientists are relying more and more on satellites,
drifters, buoys, subsea observatories and unmanned submersibles.
Fundamental Concept f.
Ocean exploration is truly interdisciplinary. It requires close
collaboration among biologists, chemists, climatologists, computer programmers,
engineers, geologists, meteorologists, and physicists, and new ways of thinking
Rationale for the Instructional Design
The specific instructional strategies and technology tools used to deliver this lesson
included Edmodo and Powerpoint. This lesson was an introduction to students to the
class on Edmodo. This is the platform used for this class for students to receive and
submit assignments. First the students were required to create an account and login to
Edmodo and the join the group code provided. Students were asked to access and
download a document provided by me on the website. Then the students were
assigned to groups in order to use a series of websites to learn about a specific
remotely operated vehicle. Students were then asked to evaluate the data and match
the designed abilities and limitations of their appointed ROV to a list of missions. The
students then reported their findings to the class and decided which mission or missions
their ROV was best suited to accomplish. Next the Ocean Literacy Standards were
shared with the students. The students were provided with the presentation online in
order for them to follow along and ask questions as needed.
Analysis of Implementation
The things that worked well for the lesson was the use of Edmodo. The students did
not have trouble creating accounts, joining the group code and accessing the
documents necessary as well as discovering how to submit assignments. What did not
work well was that not everyone had a device and therefore the work that should have
been individual work had to be changed to small group work in order that the students
were able to share the digital device to gain internet access to the Edmodo website and
the other websites required for the research of the submersibles. The lesson could be
improved for further deliver with the addition of an interactive game where the students

use the ROVs with a set of programmed limitations and the students would virtually
attempt to complete the ocean investigation mission. I would have also liked for each
student to have their own device. This definitely caught me off guard because my
expectation was that they would all show up with a device, but they did not. It would
have been too time consuming to research an open computer lab where each student
would have their own device and move the class. Instead I monitored and adjusted the
lesson so that students would work in small groups.
Summary of Significance
The lesson demonstrates my instructional competence by my leadership in the
classroom as the students are taught how to use online tools for an interactive digital
classroom. I guide the students through the process of joining the class online and
accessing documents needed for the coursework. I then guide the presentation of
research from the students to the class. Also, I share the Ocean Literacy standards with
the students using a powerpoint document which I provided to the students online as
well as displayed and discussed using an LCD projector. The program learning
outcomes demonstrated in this video are as follows:
Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively,
including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of
others.
Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.
Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects,
solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and
resources.
Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and
operations.
New technologies, sensors and tools are expanding our ability to explore the ocean.
Ocean scientists are relying more and more on satellites, drifters, buoys, subsea
observatories and unmanned submersibles.
