This course offered a lot of information in terms of school history and current policies. A strength | had was ‘being familiar with the research process (I did research in ‘my undergraduate degree}, so understood the components that go into creating a paper. A weakness s that | don'tknow exactly where the line is between being an authority figure versus being a friend. Our relationship is, ‘very good, but l sometimes worry that lam not being formal enough even though | still deliver guidance lessons. ‘Shadow/interview the SC (min, # he) Shadowing Ryan showed me how hectic it can be during fn average school day. A weakness | had was that | had no idea what to do in most unusual/emergency situations. Whenever Ryan was called into a class to solve an issue ora student came into the counseling ‘centre upset, he always seemed sure ofthe best way to resolve a problem. Since lacked experience, | often felt ‘overwhelmed and uncertain about how to solve problems. I was not sure how much of their good behaviour to attribute toa different teacher and teaching style, This class was conducted in a more relaxed way. Discussed the importance of have a good team and each ‘person within the team contributing. She said that itis Important to have a support system as the backbone for the school, but aso to support each other. Since there were multiple people at the meeting did not get a chance to talk with her personally, but | hope to be able to do so next semester. She talked about the differences between being a nurse ina hospital versus being a nurse ina school. She highlighted the importance of emotional health in addition to physical health. If had to ‘Aug 2013- Dee 2013 Observe student focused school meeting (eT, IEP, 504) (SDSU Practicum, 2012-2013) My first day at Mueller was fortunate enough to observe their resiliency monitoring process, | was astounded at how much time and effort goes into carafully examining all the students. | was also impressed ‘Aug 2013 CSP 740 Practicum Experience Profile for Rachel Kwan 6 athow many eosystemic factors were taken into account, such as social economic status, culture, family etc. A strength | had during this process was that | was extremely attentive to what everyone had to say so that I ‘could understand their quadrant system and placements tothe best of my ability. A weakness | had was that | did not understand many ofthe acronyms they used to refer ‘to programs and standardized tests ‘Observe and/or co-Tacltate (with professional SC) individual & group counseling sessions ‘Throughout the semester the interns watched the school counselor conduct ther individual and groups sessions. (One particulary sliont session is when Ryan was talking ‘to.a small child about a loss in their life, Although | was ‘not co-facltating the session, | was able to observe the ‘way Ryan explained that there are multiple ways to deal with loss. An overall weakness | have is that ! am unsure cof how to explain serious topics to kids. Watching the ‘way Ryan handled the situation gave me many ideas about what to do if happened to be the counselor on duty when the issue came up. “Aug 2013- Dec 2013 AY ‘Obsarve guidance curriculum inthe areas oF academic, career or personal/social development (Consider ASCA Core. Curriculum Action Plan} Since Muelle sa K-8 school, Ifeel that a strength I have 1s understanding afot about personal/social development, but a weakness is that Ihave not explored ‘much curriculum about careers. | am grateful that we ‘were given the opportunity to explore the curriculum library and take the intiative of finding relevant ‘curriculum for ourselves. hope to improve my knowledge on career guidance curriculum next semester, since planning forthe future is easier with an early start ‘Aug 2013.
