Grade 4 Science Rocks and Minerals

Rock Collection
Name:_________________________________ #__________

All rocks are the same, right? Many people think this is
true, but they couldnt be more wrong. There are many different
types of rocks, and each has a story to tell about where and how
it formed. If you look closely at rocks, youll find there are
striking differences between them, just as there are differences
between various kinds of trees and minerals. In this project, you
will enjoy the opportunity to hunt for rocks. Create your own
rock collection with a variety of rocks.
Project Hints:
1. Scrub your rocks with soapy water and an old toothbrush to
clean their surfaces. This will make crystals and textures
more observable.
2. Place your rocks in a cardboard egg carton or a shoebox
with your name in permanent ink in the lid.
Learning Goal: I can create a rock collection that investigates,
tests, and compares the physical properties of rocks and
minerals.
My Checklist:
I have a minimum of 6 different rocks.
I have classified each rock as one of the three types of
rocks. (sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic)
I have described each rocks physical properties. I have
included colour, texture, lustre and hardness.
I have an egg carton or a shoebox for my rock collection.
I have researched, using the books provided, about my
rocks.
I have used index cards to record the rocks information. I
have used one index card for each rock in my collection.
I have named each of my rocks.
