INT. MARTY SR.S GARAGE -DAY
MARTY MCFLY JR. [MARTY] (17), a handsome ladies man for his
age, lies on a rolling board under a 1966 VW Kombi. His best
friend, CAMERON (17), the more nerdy of the pair, sits on a
workbench, drinking a soda.
2.
CAMERON
I still want to know how you fit a
Delorean engine under the hood of a
V-dub.
Marty slides out from under the van.
MARTY
It wasnt easy.
Cameron walks to the back of the van. He lifts the hood. The
Delorean engine is crammed into the space.
MARTY
Can you imagine Griffs face when
he gets beat by a VW van?
Cameron scrunches his face in thought.
CAMERON
Nope.
Marty slides back under.
Cameron opens the hatch back. Mr. Fusion sticks up through
the floorboards into the cargo space.
CAMERON
So what is this thing?
Marty slides out, and wipes his hands on a rag.
MARTY
No idea.
CAMERON
You have no idea.
MARTY
It looks cool. What else do you
need
CAMERON
Well, if youre going to beat
Griff, a fast time.
MARTY
When I get it working, Ill have
all the time I need.
CAMERON
How can you fix it if you dont
know what it is?

switches his attention to the school yard monitors.
On the hallway monitor - Marty steps out, waves and walks up
the hall.
INT. MILL VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL CAFETERIA - DAY (LATER)
Marty and Cameron sit in the crowded room.
Trays pushed aside, Marty reads the Time book and writes
notes. Cameron plays with a rubber band.
CAMERON
When are you going to learn to get
to school on time?
Marty GRUNTS
CAMERON
Youve got fifty ways mapped out -MARTY
Fifty-two
CAMERON
-- Fifty-two ways mapped out on how
to sneak past Strickland. Wouldnt
it just be easier to be on time?
Marty continues to write notes.
MARTY
Now whats the fun in that?
5.
CAMERON
Carry the two.
MARTY
What?
CAMERON
Carry the two. Youre doing it
wrong.
Cameron takes the notes and book from Marty.
Megan (17), attractive, athletic, yet studious, holding her
lunch tray, steps up to the table.
MEGAN
Hey, cheapskate. Where were you
last night?
Megan!
MARTY
Last night. Last night.
MEGAN
Yes.
Yes.
GRIFF TANNER (19), tall football player type, and his three
CRONIES, carry trays of food to the table.
GRIFF
Hey McFly.
Cameron looks at Griff, but Marty doesnt move. Griff slaps
his tray down on the table.
6.
GRIFF
McFly, Im talking to you. You
think this is the library or
something. Get off my table.
CAMERON
But, you ate over there yesterday.
GRIFF
Yeah. Well today Im eating here.
Marty gathers his things. He and Cameron stand.
MARTY
Someday Griff.
Griff puffs out his chest and slaps his fist into his hand.
GRIFF
Someday what, McFly?
Marty looks up at Griff.
CAMERON
Someday youll learn what a library
is.
Megan CHUCKLES and stands. Griff steps between her and Marty.
GRIFF
Megan, we were just going to join
you.
MEGAN
Not likely.
GRIFF
But cheer leaders are supposed to
hang with the jocks. Those are the
rules.
MEGAN
Call me a rebel.
Megan moves to go around Griff. He sidesteps to block her.
Marty grabs for Griff, knocking Megans soda down Griffs
shirt. Griff and Marty grab each other, ready for blows.
The security camera on the ceiling pivots toward them and
zooms in. Marty and Griff let go of each other and smile for
the camera.
7.
GRIFF
This aint over McFly.
Marty, Cameron and Megan rush out. Griff shakes the soda off.
GRIFF
You hear me, McFly?
EXT. MILL VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL CAFETERIA - DAY
Marty, Cameron, and Megan exit the cafeteria, laughing.
CAMERON
Oh I want the video of that one.
MEGAN
You know hes going to want to
pound you later.
MARTY
Yeah, but that was worth every bit
of it.
EXT. MILL VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL - DAY
In the line of cars leaving the parking lot is Martys VW.
INT. MARTYS KOMBI - DAY
Marty drives out of the school parking lot. Cameron looks
around.
CAMERON
I cant believe you got this thing
running.
MARTY
Why do you think I was late today?
CAMERON
Stupid me. I thought it was
because you over slept.
The time circuits are mounted under the dashboard. All of the
labels have fallen off.
CAMERON
Whats that.
8.
MARTY
Some kind of instrument panel for
that booster attachment. Watch.
Marty reaches down between the seats. He flips on the power.
The circuit board lights up. All three lines are the present
time and day.
MARTY
Cool, huh.
Cameron looks down.
CAMERON
And what about that?
MARTY
Seems to be part of the booster.
Marty pulls in to the gas pumps at a 7/11 store. He shuts off
the van and the time circuits.
INT. SEVEN-ELEVEN STORE - DAY
Marty is loading up Camerons arms with as many Slurpees as
he can hold. The CLERK at the counter watches.
EXT. SEVEN-ELEVEN STORE - DAY
Cameron carries ten Slurpees. Marty open the van hatchback.
The clerk watches them from the window.
CAMERON
Cold, cold, cold, cold.
Marty tilts the Mr. Fusion open.
He grabs the first Slurpee and pours it in.
MARTY
According the book, this thing runs
on anything.
He grabs the next and pours.
CAMERON
Cold, cold, cold.
MARTY
But the notes says it works best
with cold and sugar. What has more
sugar and is colder than this?
9.
10.
CRONY 1
Hey, you gonna pound him or get
married?
Griff recovers and grabs Marty. He hauls back his fist.
Cameron rushes around the corner, smashing into Griff,
dousing him with five Slurpees.
Griff steps back, soaked. Marty and Cameron run for the van.
INT. MARTYS KOMBI - DAY
Marty and Cameron jump in.
CAMERON
I was hoping to drink one of those.

The van leans hard in the turn. Marty and Cameron scream.
EXT. CITY STREET - DAY
Griff expertly power slides around the corner.
INT. MARTYS KOMBI
Marty floors the gas pedal.
CAMERON
Where are you going?
MARTY
We need to test the booster, we
test the booster.
11.
CAMERON
Are you nuts. You almost lost it
back there.
MARTY
You have any better ideas?
Cameron looks out the back at the gaining Mustang
CAMERON
Prayer comes to mind.
EXT. TIME TRIAL HILL - DAY
The van winds down the mountain road.
behind.
CAMERON
God, Im sorry about that quarter I
took from the offering plate. I
was only four. I thought they were
free samples.
Marty spins the wheel to round the next corner.
MARTY
Just need to make the straight
away.
The Mustang taps the Kombis back bumper. Cameron opens his
eyes.
MARTY
Just a little farther.
INT. GRIFFS MUSTANG - DAY
The Cronies hang on like Cameron while Griff drives like a
madman. Griff taps the Kombi again.
CRONY 2
Man your gonna wreck him.
GRIFF
He wrecked my shirt. Twice.
12.
Griff accelerates.
INT. MARTYS KOMBI - DAY
The Mustang hits the Kombi hard. Marty struggles to maintain
control.
MARTY
One more turn.
Marty cranks the wheel.
EXT. TIME TRIAL HILL - DAY
A Jones Septic pumping truck travels the road near the
bottom of the hill.
INSERT - BUMPER STICKER
Back off, or Ill flush
BACK TO SCENE

and the Mustang come into view in his mirror.
INT. MARTYS KOMBI - DAY
Marty straightens out the Kombi on the long straight slope to
the bottom.
MARTY
Now weve got him.
Marty reaches down and flips on the time circuits. The board
lights up with the current time and date. He slams the gas
pedal to the floor.
INT. GRIFFS MUSTANG
Griff accelerates. The Cronies holler again. Griff contacts
Martys bumper and starts to push.
13.
CAMERON
Were going to die.
Eighty-seven. More sparks.
CAMERON
This is how you cross over.
theres a bright light.
First
14.
GRIFF
What the...
Griff spots the septic truck and slams on the brakes.
EXT. TIME TRIAL HILL - DAY
A loud popping and bright flash behind the Mustang brings the
Kombi back, behind the Mustang.
INT. MARTYS KOMBI
Marty and Cameron are still screaming. Marty swerves and

Cameron looks back.
CAMERON
Ew.

rolls shut.
INT. MARTY SR.S GARAGE - DAY
Marty and Cameron jump out of the van.
MARTY
I dont know what that was. I dont
want to know what that was.
CAMERON
At least were not dead. And you
owe me a Slurpee.
INT. DOC BROWNS STUDY - NIGHT
The television is on in the large, ornate room. An old man
[Doc Brown] hidden by a high back chair watches the news.
NEWS ANCHOR
And in our more disgusting news, we
take you to Melissa Towers at the
scene of a sewage accident.
Melissa?
15.
16.
MARTY
Like what? I dont know. You tell
me how we were in front of Griff
and then behind him. I dont know
what Im looking for.
CAMERON
That makes it hard to find. I mean,
when do you know when to stop?
EXT. MCFLY HOUSE DRIVEWAY - DAY
A Rolls Royce pulls into the driveway.
INT. MCFLY HOUSE - DAY
Marty Sr. opens the door. Doc Brown stands in the doorway.
MARTY SR.
Doc, what are you doing here. We
havent seen each other in, what,
ten years?
Doc pushes his way inside.
DOC
Far too long Marty. Far too Long.
MARTY SR.
Well your looking good.
Marty Sr. looks outside at the Rolls
MARTY SR.
Nice ride.
Doc spins around on Marty Sr.
DOC
Where is it, Marty?
MARTY SR.
You lost me.
DOC
Where is the time machine?
MARTY SR.
It was destroyed. Thirty years ago.
You helped me clean up the parts.
17.
The parts.
DOC
Where are they?
MARTY SR.
Locked up out back.
DOC
Are you sure?
EXT. MCFLY HOUSE BACK YARD - DAY
Marty Sr. and Doc walk to the storage shed.
MARTY SR.
I locked it up right after the
train hit it.
They stop in front of the dilapidated shed.
MARTY SR.
Well it was locked up.
They hear Marty and Cameron inside.
INT. STORAGE SHED - DAY
Marty Sr. and Doc enter. Marty and Cameron are digging
through DeLorean parts. Marty turns around.
MARTY
Oh, hi.
Marty slaps Cameron to turn around.
CAMERON
Hey Mr. McFly. Were not doing
anything.
INT. MARTY SR.S GARAGE - DAY
Doc admires the engine in the Kombi.
DOC
Amazing.
MARTY
Youre not mad?
MARTY SR.
What about me? Im mad.
18.
CAMERON
Oh, come on Mr. M. Youve gotta
admit its just a little cool.
MARTY
And you werent using it.
MARTY SR.
Im not using my timeshare in
Tahiti either.
CAMERON
Can I have it?
DOC
(to himself)
I cant believe it actually still
works.
MARTY
Cant believe what works?
DOC
The time circuits.
CAMERON
Oh, we turned those on, Mister
Brown, they didnt make us go any
faster.
DOC
Oh but they did. You were so fast
you went backwards.
Cameron nods, confused.
DOC
Marty.
MARTY
Yes.
MARTY SR.
Yes.
MARTY
Yes.
DOC
(to Marty Jr.)
This one. What happened when you
turned on the circuits?
19.
Nothing.
was it.
MARTY
The board lit up.
That
DOC
And what did the board say
MARTY
It was all the same. All three
lines.
DOC
Thats it. Dont you see? When you
hit eighty-eight miles per hour the
time circuits sent you back in time
to the exact time you just left.
Which in this case, given the time
flux of the temporal displacement,
was about twenty feet behind where
you were.
MARTY
Wait a minute. What are we talking
about? I was just trying to go
faster.
DOC
Technically, you were. About one
point zero-one-two times the speed
of light.
Marty looks as if he understands. He loses that look.
MARTY
I dont get it.
CAMERON
Dude, you built a time machine.
Everyone looks at Cameron.
INT. MCFLY HOUSE - DAY
Marty Sr. Paces. Doc drinks tea while Marty and Cameron sit.
MARTY SR.
Doc, you said you wanted the time
machine destroyed. I thought it
was.
Marty Sr. looks at Marty.
20.
DOC
Dont you remember? I built
another machine, from the
locomotive.
MARTY SR.
What ever happened to that?
DOC
Im ashamed to admit it Marty. But
that is why I came here. When I
realized that Marty Jr. Had put the
time machine back together, I had a
chance to fix everything.
MARTY SR.
But its a time machine, Doc. You
already know what can... Wait, did
you say fix everything?
EXT. TIME TRIAL HILL - NIGHT
The VW Kombi sits at the top of the hill, lowered and supd
up. Marty and Cameron are in the van. Cameron sips on a
Slurpee. Doc and Marty Sr. Stand by.
DOC
(to Marty)
Now you know what you have to do.
MARTY
Go back to 1965 and stop you from
giving you the formula for the
shampoo.
DOC
Right. Now your Ferrari suspension
should get you around the corners
better. When you hit the
straightaway hit the turbo.
MARTY
Got it.
Marty puts the van in gear and starts down the hill.
MARTY SR.
Really Doc? Shampoo?
21.
DOC
I wanted something that was
innocuous enough to not change
history. Besides, my hair has never
looked better.
Marty Sr. Looks at Doc.
MARTY SR.
Yeah, right. How come I dont
remember any of this?
DOC
For the same reason that we need to
send Marty Jr. back instead of you.
I couldnt take you back again. The
risk was just too great that you
would run into yourself.
Marty point into the valley.
MARTY SR.
Theyre almost there.
EXT. TIME TRIAL HILL STRAIGHTWAWAY - NIGHT
The van comes out of the last turn like a sports car.
INT. MARTYS KOMBI - NIGHT
Marty flips the switch for the turbo.
MARTY
Here we go.
CAMERON
What do I do?
A squirrel runs out on to the road.
MARTY
Squirrel!
Marty swerves. Cameron spills the Slurpee on the time
circuits. The destination time (labels now hand written on
the time circuits) turns to all zeros.
EXT. MARTYS KOMBI -
NIGHT
22.
MARTY
This doesnt look like 1965.
Marty looks out the window.
MARTY
Hey look. Were at the Safari Park.
Marty drives by a lion laying next to a lamb.
MARTY
Theres a lion, and a...lamb?
CAMERON
And a naked woman picking fruit.
Marty slams on the brakes.
CAMERON
Take a look at them apples.
Marty looks at Cameron and then the time circuits.
MARTY
What did you do?
EXT. GARDEN OF EDEN - DAY
EVE stands in front of the van about to take a bite from an
apple. Marty and Cameron jump out of the Kombi. They charge
at Eve.
MARTY
No!
CAMERON
No!
Eve turns and SCREAMS, throwing the apple into the air.
23.
Marty tackles Eve while Cameron grabs a stick and smashes the
apple repeatedly.
CAMERON
I think I got it.
Marty looks into Eves terrified face.
MARTY
Um, Hi. Im your great great great
something grandson.
Eve shoves herself loose and runs to the bushes.
CAMERON
Dude, you great great whatever
grandma is hot.
MARTY
Shes your great great whatever
grandma too.
CAMERON
Were related?
Marty brushes himself off. He looks at the smashed apple.
MARTY
Thats odd.
CAMERON
What part of this are you
understanding?
MARTY
No, the apple. Doc said if we
changed anything, things around us
would change. What bigger change
could there be than this?
Lightning flashes and the sky grows dark. Marty and Cameron
look to the side.
ADAM stands by the next tree. Pomegranate in his hand, juice
running down his chin.
ADAM
Oops
CAMERON
Pomegranates. Who knew.
Lightning flashes again. Adam runs for the bushes.
24.
MARTY
Wed better get back
They turn.
25.
26.
The lion
27.
