Affective Lesson plan

1. Activity name: Shapes and Differences with Spookley the Square

Pumpkin
2. Grade Level: Kindergarten
3. Standard: K.G.2 Identify and describe shapes (squares, circles,
triangles)
4. Goal: Children will recognize given shapes and will also know that their
characteristics make then unique
5. Objective: After Reading The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin,
students will identify the shapes square, identify the shapes square,
circle, and triangle. Students will also recognize differences in one
another and know that the differences make them unique and should
be appreciated.
6. Rational: Students will encounter the shapes, square, circle, and
triangle in everyday life and should recognize them. In addition it is
important that students know and recognize differences in others and
are able to appreciate those differences in others.
7. Materials needed:
Book: The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin
Large paper
Precut pumpkins in the shapes of squares, circles, and
triangles (one set for each student)
8. Procedure:
Have students sit on carpet
Remind students how we sit at carpet time
o Criss cross apple sauce hands in your lap
o Listen to Miss Lupu when she is talking
Introduce The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin
o This is the title. Point at title
o Joe Troiano is the author. What does the author do?
Read the book to students
o How did Spookley feel when the other pumpkins were
teasing him?

o How do you feel if someone teases you

Get out a big piece of paper
o As a group brainstorm ways they are the same and
ways they are different
Give students each a set of shapes
o Circle
o Square
o Triangle
Review shapes
o Squares has four equal sides and four corners
o Triangle has three sides and three corners
o Circle has no sides, no corners and is round
Now I will ask you questions about yourself. If you relate to
that question you will hold up the shape that I tell you to.
Remember, hold up the shape I tell you. Do not answer with
your hands or words.
We will do a practice question.
o If you are in Kindergarten, hold up the raise your
square.
o Look around. Does everyone have the same shape in
the air
o Correct students if they are holding up the wrong shape
Ask questions:
o If you are happy raise your circle
o If you are a girl raise your square
o If you like ice cream raise your triangle
o If you chose second choice for lunch raise your square
o If you chose first choice for lunch raise your circle
o If you brought lunch raise your triangle
o If you are a boy raise your square
o If you have long hair raise your circle
o If you have short hair raise your triangle
o If you have a pet raise your square
o If you have a brother raise your triangle
o If you have a sister raise your circle
Did you see how many things were the same and how many
things that were different from each other? These are things
that make us special and unique.

9. Assessment: I will observe the students while doing the shape and
differences activity. Observe students ability to recognize the shapes.
