Chapter One:

Aspects of Holistic Child Development

Holistic development sees the child as a whole person:

Physically, emotionally, intellectually

,socially, morally, culturally and spritiually.

We study patterns of growth which are guidelines for normal development.


Developmental norms (the pattern of growth that children should follow) are
also called ________________________

Physical Development = body increases skills and become


more complex in performance
Gross Motor Skill = the use of the large muscles. Example= walking \
running \ climbing
Fine motor Skills= the use of both muscles. Example= drawing
Sensory Development- vision, hear, touch, smell taste and
PROPRIOCEPTION= the sense that tells people where the moving parts of the
body (arms and legs) are in relation to the rest of the body.

Cognitive and language Development


Cognitive = development of the mind
Perception = helps us understand what we see, touch , feel hear, etc.

Language development
Receptive Speech= what a person understands
Expressive Speech = the word person produces
Articulation = pronunciation the word

Emotional and social Development

Emotional = the development of feeling about oneself, towards other


people and the development of self -esteem and self- concept
Social development = how the child relates to other people.

The Importance of Play
Play provides opportunity for a child to:

Develop confidence and self-esteem


Use creativity and imagination
Develop reading , thinking and problem solving skills
How to control their emotional
Learn social skills

IMPORTANT :
Not all people(educationalists) agree with the importance of using
technology with very young children (nursery school age). Some
believe it is a good idea, others believe it is a bad idea.
