Volumetric Float Type Fuel Quantity Indication

The pivot arm and ball is the main component in the volumetric fuel indication system.
The arm is usually mounted in the fuel tank of the aircraft at a location, which enables it
to reach the minimum and maximum points of the fuel tank.

The above diagram illustrates a typical volumetric DC electrical system. This type of system
would be used in an older aircraft or on some general aviation aircraft.
The pivot arm is attached to an electrical transmitter which transforms the angular movement of
the arm into a DC electrical signal. This transmitter is usually constructed of a wiper arm and a
potentiometer. A DC signal is sent from the potentiometer to the indicator.
As a result of the variations in current flow, a moving coil or rotor within the indicator is deflected
to position a pointer, calibrated in the required scale of litres or gallons.
Calibration adjustments can be made by bending the float arm for a full or empty condition.
The DC powered indicating system can also be adjusted by changing the resistance value of
the transmitter (tank resistor).

When working in or around fuel tanks, care should be taken as electrical components could
cause sparks which could ignite fuel vapour. Always follow the instructions of the aircraft manual
when replacing components or working on the aircrafts fuel systems.
When replacing parts associated with the aircraft fuel system, always use approved parts from
the aircraft manufacture.

CAUTION
Use extreme care while working with electrical components of a fuel system
The possibility of an electrical spark around an empty fuel tank can create a hazardous
situation
