Tutorial-12

Q1. Hot water at 98C flows through a horizontal steel pipe [k=54 W/mC] of
inside diameter 0.0525 m and outside diameter 0.06033m and is exposed to steam
at 1 atm and 100C. Calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient for this situation
based on outer area of pipe.
4

Properties of water at 98 C =960 kg/m3, = 2.82 10

Pa. s, k=0.68 W/m C, Prl=1.76.

For film condensate properties can be considered same as above and hfg = 2.255 106 J/Kg

Q2. Hot water at 90C flows through a horizontal steel pipe [k=54 W/mC] of ID
2.5 cm with 0.8 mm thickness at a velocity of 4 m/s. This tube forms the inside of a
double pipe heat exchanger. The outer pipe has a 3.75 cm ID, and engine oil at 20
C flows in the annular space at a velocity of 7 m/s. Calculate the overall heat
transfer coefficient for this arrangement. The tube length is 6 m.
4
Properties of water at 90 C =965 kg/m3, = 3.16 10

Pa s, k=0.676 W/m C, Pr=1.96

Properties of engine oil at 20 C = 0.0009 m2/ s, k=0.145W/m C, Pr=10400
