PHYLOSOPHY PROJECT

Professional Outlook Project
Content Outline

Watson (2009) in her Caring Theory addresses nursing as a process of caring, life-long
relationships among humans and the deep experiences of life itself. For me nursing is a
process during which we discover something new every day. I cannot imagine myself one day
feeling that I know everything about my profession. Nursing is never done; it is always do.
Person/Patient is an individual. Nursing is holistic patient-oriented process.

Biological component: human body is a wonderful creature.

Sociocultural component: each person has his or her own thoughts, values, believes,
attitudes, morals, etc. No two people are the same in the world: every person is unique
and should be treated accordingly.

Patient is in charge of his or her own health.

Environment: Patients are not separated from the world; they are influenced by their
environment.

External and Internal

Nurse should always be there for his/her patients. Nursing care doesnt end with a shift.

Cares and support patient

Helps expand knowledge

Encourages grow of the inner core

Cannot make decisions for patient

Health is a state: whether state of well-being or state of illness.

Cannot be perfect but can always strive for better

PHYLOSOPHY PROJECT

Ability to achieve higher level of wellness

Patient is responsible for his or her own health

Practice environment is pure: active listening, empathy, justice, ethics, etc. Caring is a
universal phenomenon, which is likely to be perceived differently by patients and nurses if they
come from different cultural backgrounds. Therefore, creating pure nursing environment which
does not stereotype or judge but tries to listen and understand, is of tremendous importance.
Goals: Nursing is a life-long process. At this point I am opened to new experiences and
opportunities. I am going to pursue Master level; however, what kind of nursing exactly I want to
do I am going to discover within next three years.
Challenges to nursing now and in the future:

Advanced degrees will not be an option

Patient safety

Increased standards of care and responsibilities

Cost accessible to everyone

Original Piece of Art
In my project, I reflected the entire product as a process by making unfinished scrapbook

where I included four concepts. Each patient and his or her environment and state of health is
unique and can turn different directions. I demonstrated practice environment as a white paper,
not an empty paper, but pure with no judgments or stereotyping. It is then is filled with
experiences, education, and challenges nurses confront every day. I demonstrated a person as a
combination of body and mind, which are influenced by external and internal environment. I
compared environment with weather conditions, such as rain, sun, and wind. I then showed how
people differ depending on their values and beliefs when they are in similar situations. Patients

response depends on patients support group and whether he or she has inner strength. I then
showed nursing as a hand, which is necessary to support and teach patients; however, what
decision patient makes depend on his or her own unique situation. I demonstrated health as a
tree, which can grow or die depending on the choice of every patient.
