STANDARD:
S.K-2.A.1.1.1: Identify a scientific fact as something that can be
observed using the 5 senses.

I.Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):

The second grade students will determine which body system is used to hear
by participating in an inquiry about the vibrations our ears can hear.

II.Instructional Materials
a.paper towel tubes
b.rulers
c.19 inches of elastic
d.3 feet of string
III.Subject Matter/Content:
a.Prerequisite skills
Basic understanding of the use of your five senses.

b.Key Vocabulary
Outer Ear: the part of the ear that can be seen on the outside of your
head
Inner Ear: the semicircular canals and cochlea, which form the organs
of balance and hearing and are embedded in the temporal bone.
Middle Ear: the air-filled central cavity of the ear, behind the eardrum.
Ear Drum: a membrane of the middle ear that vibrates in response to
sound waves; the tympanic membrane.
Cochela: the spiral cavity of the inner ear containing the organ of
Corti, which produces nerve impulses in response to sound vibrations.

II.Implementation
a.Introduction

II.a.i.To introduce this lesson the teacher will play the five senses ears and

hearing song.
II.a.ii.The teacher will hand out a parts of the ear worksheet for students to fill
in parts while they learn.
II.a.iii.Teacher will introduce and give a short description of each part of the
ear and its purpose.
II.a.iv.Students will have half the class lay on the floor, the other half will jump
so they can hear the vibrations.

b.Development
II.b.i. The teacher will explain the inquiry to the students.
II.b.ii.In the middle of their table they will find a card board tube, elastic and
string.

II.b.iii. Students will construct the tube by following the direction sheet.
II.b.iv. Students will test inquiry
II.b.v.Teacher will ask: Why can we hear the sound of the air leaving the
tube?

c.Closure
II.c.i.Students will do their best to fill out the parts of the ear work sheet.
II.c.ii.On the SMART board students can volunteer to go up and label the part
of the ear on the board.

d.Accommodations/Differentiation

A second grade student with ADHD will work better if placed in a


smaller group with less distractions during the inquiry.

1.Formative

-Students will do their best to fill out the parts of the ear work
sheet.
-On the SMART board students can volunteer to go up and
label the part
of the ear on the board.

-Why is hearing important?
- Students will explain by writing a short response or picture.
