EEN1016 Tutorial 3 2005/06

1. The circuit in Figure (1) is used to rectify a sinusoidal input signal with a peak voltage of 120 V
and a frequency of 60 HZ. A filter capacitor is connected in parallel with R. If the output voltage
cannot drop below 100V, determine the required value of the capacitance C. The transformer has a
turns ratio of N1: N2= 1: 1, where N2 is the number of turns on each of the secondary windings.
Assume the diode cut-in voltage is 0.7V and the output resistance is 2.5 k.

2. The input signal voltage to the full-wave rectifier circuit in Figure (2) is VI= 160sin [2(60) t] V.
Assume V=0.7V for each diode. Determine the required turns ratio of the transformer to produce
a peak output voltage of (a) 25V, and (b) 100V. What must be the PIV rating for each case?

3. The Zener diode regulator circuit shown in Figure (3) has an input voltage that varies between
10 and 14V, and a load resistance that varies between R L=20 and 100. Assume a 5.6 Zener diode
is used, and assume IZ (min) = 0.1 IZ (max). Find the value of Ri required and the minimum power
rating of the diode.

4. Determine the IL, IZ, vr(p-p) and Vo(DC) for the regulated power supply below.
Assume C = 3,300 F, Rs = 120, RL = 75, VZ = 5.1V and IZT = 20mA.

5. For the circuit showed in figure below, the input signal, V in = 16sint. Assume a 0.7V drops
across each conducting diode. Given Vr1 = 6V, Vr2 = 4V, Vr3 = 2V and Zener voltage, Vz = 5.3V
and Vdc = 3.3V. Draw the output waveform.
