Lesson Title: Innovations and

Industry

Class: U.S. History


Time: 50 minutes

Enduring Understanding: Students will understand how innovations and industry
boosted the American economy in late 19th century, and how this newly bolstered
economy affected American workers, governmental roles, and society.
Essential Question(s): Was the rise of industry beneficial for the United States?
Lesson objectives/expectation of students: Students will actively listen to lecture
and mark key points and main ideas of the material. Students will also engage in brief
discussions throughout the lecture.

Standards Addressed:
6.1.1 Factors in the American Industrial Revolution: economic policies of
government and industrial leaders (including John D. Rockefeller and Andrew
Carnegie)
`` 6.1.5 A Case Study of American Industrialism: entrepreneurial decision
making by Henry Ford and others, the development of the workforce, the
impact on American society.
Rationale:
Previously, students have studied about the inventions and innovations that helped
spark the ignition of the Industrial Revolution. Students learned about the lifechanging technologies that helped bolster industries, businesses, and capitalism. This
will help students understand the next area of focus which explores the growth and
relationships of these industries, business, and economic systems and policies.

Anticipatory Set/Activating Prior Knowledge:


How did the new inventions and innovations help set the foundation and the tone of
the Industrial Revolution? (Encourage students to make connections with how these
inventions and innovations made an easier transition into the Industrial Revolution
which resulted into other industrial and societal transformations.)

Guided Practice and Monitoring:


Teacher will ask questions throughout the lecture to check for understanding and to
make sure students are a part of the learning process. Teacher will also emphasize key
concepts that students should definitely write down in their notes.

Independent Practice:
Students will practice note-taking and complete notes on their own while listening to
lecture.

Assessment:
Notes will be assessed during the next notebook check to check for content, main
ideas, and organization.
A one-page written journal entry in the students notebook discussing this questions,
Are the industrial giants better described as robber barons or captains of
industry? Pick a side and explain using information from Chapter 13.
