S.K-2.D.2.1: Identify basic weather conditions.
I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
The 2nd grade students will be able to describe temperature, wind and precipitation by
creating a chart with these columns: Date, Weather, Temperature.
The 2nd grade students will be able to identify and use tools to measure weather by taking
the temperature for the day using a thermometer.

III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline of
additional content)
A. Prerequisite skills
1.) Students will share what they already know about the weather and
temperature changes.
B. Key Vocabulary
1.) Weather- the state of the atmosphere with respect to wind, temperature,
cloudiness, moisture, pressure, etc.
2.) Thermometer- an instrument for measuring temperature, often a sealed
glass tube that contains a column of liquid, as mercury, that expands and
contracts, or rises and falls, with temperature changes, the temperature
being read where the top of the column coincides with a calibrated scale
marked on the tube or its frame.

IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1.) To introduce this lesson the teacher will take the students outside to show
them what the weather is like for the day and have a discussion by having
the students share their experiences preparing for the weather before
coming to school.
2.) The teacher will ask interactive questions to promote active listening and
check for comprehension.

b. How do people know what the weather will be like tomorrow?
c. What is the weather like in different seasons?
B. Development
1.) The teacher will explain weather and temperature with a power point.
2.) The class will draw the current weather of the day and apply their results
to their column chart.
3.) The teacher will put students into groups where they can share and discuss
their drawings and charts with each other.
4.) After completing the inquiry the class will participate in a whole group
discussion to share their drawings and charts.
C. Closure
1.) The teacher will review with students what they have learned weather,
temperature, and precipitation. Record their responses in the What We
Learned column of the class K-W-L Chart.

1.) To accommodate students with ADHD, I will have the class work in small
groups to support issues such as attention, note taking, and clarification.

1. Formative
a. The teacher will float during group activities to formatively assess the
comprehension and progress of the students. (The teacher will use her
data sheet to record the students comprehension of the objectives and
standards.)

1.) Science notebooks will be collected at the completion of the unit to


demonstrate understanding of each specific inquiry. (Full credit will be given if all parts
are completed and supported.)
