S.K-2.D.2.1: Identify basic weather conditions.
I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
The 2nd grade students will be able to describe the characteristics and effects of a blizzard
by making a snowstorm in a jar.
II. Instructional Materials
Jar or similar container
Baby Oil
White Paint
Water
Iridescent Glitter
Alka Seltzer Tablets
Guided Notes
III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline of
additional content)
A. Prerequisite skills
1.) Students will share what they already know about blizzards by looking at a
picture and brainstorming what they see.
B. Key Vocabulary
1.) Blizzards- a heavy and prolonged snowstorm covering a wide area.
2.) Winter- the coldest season
3.) Frost Bite- injury to any part of the body after excessive exposure to
extreme cold
C. Big Idea
1.) When do blizzards occur and why do they happen?

IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1.) To introduce this lesson the students will fill out a K-W-L chart to let me
know how much they know about blizzards.
2.) After this the teacher will show a video, Snowflakes to motivate and
spark their interest.

3.) The teacher will ask interactive questions to promote active listening and
check for comprehension.

b. What causes snow to form? (Record answers in the What We Know
column of the class K-W-L Chart)
B. Development
1.) The teacher and students will use their acquired knowledge from the video
to create a definition for snowflakes and snowstorms.
2.) The teacher will introduce winter and snowfall with guided notes (see
attached).
3.) The class will draw their favorite activity to do in the snow.
4.) The teacher will put students into groups where they will begin to make
their own snowstorm.
5.) The students will fill the jar of the way with baby oil.
6.) In the bowl the students will mix together very warm water and white
paint to make the white water (try to use enough water so that you can fill
the jar almost to the top).
7.) The students will then pour the white water into the jar and sprinkle in the
glitter.
8.) Students will wait for the glitter and water to settle at the bottom of the jar.
9.) Once the water is settled at the bottom the students will take an alka
seltzer tablet and break it into pieces and drop them into the jar to create
their snowstorm.

After completing the inquiry the class will participate in a whole
group discussion to share their books.

1.) To accommodate students with ADHD, I will have the class work in small
groups to support issues such as attention, note taking, and clarification.
