Improving Nutrition
The Guatemala Council of Evangelical Churches, founded in
1986, is a long-time Mission and Service partner of The United
Church of Canada. High in the mountains of Guatemala, the
council works with families who have a very poor diet consisting of
beans, corn, salt, and coffee. The council approached 12
communities with a proposal to work together to improve local
nutrition, particularly the childrens diets.
Women in the communities were very interested, and a search
began for crops that not only provide food but also help replenish
the soil. Twelve different, complementary vegetable crops were
introduced on small plots of land.
Now communities have access to a range of vegetables that
simply werent available before. Using discarded tires as planters
for vegetable gardens to supplement limited access to land,
communities have gone on to build small greenhouses so soft
vegetables can be grown in harsh mountain conditions.
These projects have helped open doors for the communities.
Families now have healthier diets, crops for sale, and a seed
conservation program that means crops can be planted year after
year.
Next steps are to continue working on animal husbandry projects.
Together the people of the United Church, the Guatemala Council
of Evangelical Churches, and communities in Totonicapn (Tohtoh-nee-kah-PAN) and El Quich (El KEE-chay) districts have
improved the nutrition and overall health of 320 children in 466
families.
Please join me and continue to give generously so that families
can eat nutritious food.
