Verbal Association Rhythm Dialogue-Imitation Activity Plan

1. Summary of Lesson:
In this lesson, students will learn a duple meter chant, and learn how to engage in
dialogue-imitation using mb and MB patterns on beat function syllables.
2. Student Characteristics and Prior Knowledge:
The students are in third grade. They have been fully immersed in duple and triple
meter at the A/O level and 80% of students are imitating and chanting on neutral
syllables with accuracy. The students are now learning how to imitate rhythm
anchor patterns in dialogue on beat function syllables, and will be assessed
individually at the VA level.
3. Learning Goals/Objectives/National Standards:
1. Move to rhythm anchors (mb and MB) in duple and triple meters
a. Students will feel and move to mb in duple meter
b. Students will feel and move to MB in dupl,e meter
2. Chant, in dialogue-imitation, rhythm anchors (mb and MB) patterns in
duple and triple meters.
a. Students will chant mb & MB dialogue-imitation patterns in
duplemeter on beat function syllables.
3. National/Delaware Standards:
1. Chanting alone and with others a varied repertoire of music.
1.1 Imitate melodic rhythm anchor patterns.
1.2 Modified: Chant rhythm anchor patterns in meter and tempo.
4. Assessment Strategies:
I will record the degree to which students move to the MB and mb in duple meter,
as well as the degree to which students accurately chant MB & mb rhythm
patterns in dialogue-imitation on beat-function syllables using an observational
checklist. (See checklist at the end of the plan).

6. Teaching Methods/ Instructional Procedures/ Learning Activities:
1. T and S are standing in self-space.
2. T establishes duple meter by chanting mb/MB patterns in beat function
syllables to acculturate S to duple meter, gesturing for S to listen and move
with CFM.

3. T performs the chant on neutral syllables, demonstrating CFM.
4. T demonstrates moving MB in heels, and chants My Mother, Your Mother on
neutral syllable.
5. T demonstrates moving mb on thighs, and chants My Mother, Your Mother on
neutral syllables.
6. T chants 4 MB duple meter patterns (including MB and mb) on beat function
syllables and gestures for S to echo patterns as a class.
7. T brings out microphone and chants the chant on words.
8. T chants MB & mb duple meter rhythm patterns to S who she directs the
microphone towards.
9. Over several repetitions of the chant, S will be assessed on their ability to
imitate MB & mb rhythm patterns in duple meter on neutral syllables.
10. T performs entire chant on words to conclude activity.
7. Possible Pitfalls and Teachable Moments:
1. Students will not feel the beat
a. T will have S move with CFM in duple meter so that S can better
coordinate their bodies before imposing MB or mb on their movement.
2. Students will use incorrect beat function syllables when chanting
a. T will echo back accurate beat function syllables to match the rhythm
the S chanted, and gesture for the S to chant again on beat function
syllables.
b. T may chant accurate syllables, and return to the S who struggled later
on in the activity to reinforce with a different pattern.
8. Extensions:
1. Students should experience a similar activity with a chant in triple meter.
2. T may add a rhythmic vocal ostinato to be performed with the chant.
3. T may have students find a partner and chose a leader and a follower. S may
take turns creating duple meter pattern chants on beat function syllables for
their partner to echo.
4. T may perform same activity with different duple meter chant.
