SLP Assessment Interview
1. What is your employment setting?
Marian Hope for Children's Therapy - a non-profit, faith-based therapy
center for children
2. What percentage of your work is concerned with assessment of children
with speech sound disorders?
8%
3. What are some of the reasons you assess?
Referrals from parents, teachers, or First Steps, reports of unintelligibly or
sound errors, informal observations results indicating concern in the area
of speech
4. What standardized tests do you frequently use to assess speech sound
disorders? What do you like about these particular tests?
Structured Photographic Articulation Test - optional non-standardized
assessment of phonological processes and connected speech, more
engaging pictures for children than the GFTA or others
Goldman Fristoe Test of Articulation 5. What is your assessment approach if you suspect a child has a
phonological disorder? Specifically using Maximal Oppositions?
Standardized assessment + speech sample + observation + analysis of
phonological processes
Assessment could include receptive identification of maximal oppositions,
minimal pairs, etc.
6. What tips would you give a new clinician for effective elicitation of a
speech sample?
Find materials/visuals that interest your client. Use open-ended questions.
