The Student-Led Conference (SLC) allows students to take responsibility for their learning and be active promoters of their own achievement, efforts and attitudes in school. Everything you need to know about the
Student-Led Conference Why is this conference a special occasion for students? The Student-Led Conference (SLC) allows students to take responsibility for their learning and be active promoters of their own achievement, efforts and attitudes in school. The SLC gives students an opportunity to show ownership of the learning process by taking the lead as parents listen and ask questions, while teachers take a step back during the conference. What will the be focus of the conference? At BIFS, we believe that reflection is a critical process in learning. The conference provides a snapshot of your childs learning and growth as seen from his or her own perspective. Leading to this day, your child has been provided opportunities to take a pause, look back, and reflect on their work. Your child will share and discuss select pieces of work that he or she has done throughout the year. What will the day be like? Please go straight to the ES Hall at the designated time. Your child will have a schedule for the day, which will take you to the classroom, gym, IT, music, art, and Korean/EAL classrooms. To showcase their learning, children will use their portfolio, notebooks, wall displays, and even teach you a game or two!

What do I do as a parent? Come to the conference, and come on time. Let your child guide you through the conference. Listen actively and ask prompting questions to allow your child to describe in as full a detail as possible the different aspects of his or her work. Make positive comments and use an encouraging tone. Answer our Google survey form soon after the conference. Celebrate the best way your family knows how! Is it okay to talk in another language? Yes. Feel free to communicate in the language you are most comfortable in during the conference. The purpose is to allow your child to share his or her learning in the most effective way possible. Can I talk to the teacher during the conference? The SLC is not designed for lengthy conversations with the teachers. While teachers will be visible throughout the conference, their main role is to provide guidance to your child, when needed. Please feel free to contact the teacher(s) prior to the conference if you have any questions about the SLC process. What leading questions could I ask during the conference? Can you tell me about your work? (purpose & process) What is something new and/or exciting that you learned from this task? What do you think you did well in this task? What was challenging about this task? What would you change/do better next time? How did you feel about this piece of work?
