Old McDonald Had a Farm for grades 2-3 students
Description of activity: The students will learn Old McDonald had a Farm.
1. I will play a recording, or YouTube video of the song. The class will sing along and
march with the recording or video two to three times to learn the structure and content in
each section of the music.
2. I will then tell the children that we will use each students name as we sing the song, such
as Young Marissa had a farm. We will practice with three names. As we practice, when
we get to the animal part, I will let that student choose an animal and pick an action for
that animal. Teacher will write the students name and their animal on the board for
visual learners.
3. As we sing the sing, the class will watch, listen and follow the action that the student
presents. We will continue this process until every child has had a turn.
4. As a final assessment, and to use some technology, we will make a video, featuring each
student with their animal choice.
Desired outcomes of the lesson:
1. Students will demonstrate singing a song on pitch and using the correct patterns.
2. Students will analyze and synthesize the lyric by inserting their name, and all the
other students names in the correct place in the song as well as an animal with
sound and actions.
3. Students will perform their individualized rendition of a traditional song for the
class.
