Students will
use an app
called Quick
Math to
practice their
arithmetic
skills and
review/learn
math
problems. The
benefit to
doing it on the
app and the
mobile device
is that the
students are
able to
physically draw
their answers
on the screen.

Students will
use Show

teacher
places up on
the board.

students be

The students
will then
access it and

numbers. The
students will
take notes,
either
handwritten
or on a
mobile
device, and
use the

to practice

Students will
investigate and
learn more
about

spending time
using the app

how to create a

Reading, Writing, and Communicating

1. Oral
Expression
and
Listening

2. Reading
for All
Purposes

Teacher will
prepare a
video in
which the
story they
are reading
is captured.
This video
will have
many
different
form of
media and
will be
engaging for
the
students. It
will also
push the
students to
strive for a
higher
standard of
work when
they create
their own
videos about
their own
books.
#1, 2, 3

To reward
positive
behavior, I
allow the
students who
were
behaving well
in class and
staying
focused and
on task the
chance to
listen to
books by
activating
one of the
many QR
codes posted
throughout
my classroom
that links
them to the
reading of a
childrens
book from my
bookshelf.

After reading a
certain genre of
book, I will have
my students

The teacher will

and will post the
notes on Google

write about
what they
thought about
the genre of
book they read
and if they think
they will read a
book from the
same genre
again. This will
encourage my
students to be
active readers
and for them to
reflect on their
reading
experiences
over the years
and books read.

3. Writing
and
Composition

Students will
use the app
called
WordPress, or
use the
website, to
create their
own blogs. This
way students
are practicing
good writing
techniques and
skills, but are
also able to
write about
things that
interest them
and write in a
low-key, lowstress
environment.
This fits with
analysis
because the
students are
able to place
everything
they have
learned about
writing into a
different
sphere of

Drive. This way

the students
can access the
notes, be
looking closely
at the pages
during the
lecture, and
adding notes to
their own set of
notes as well as
to the master
class set of
notes for points
to discuss after
the lecture as
well.

The teacher
will provide the
students with
an example of
a story they
created on the
app Word
Creativity Kit
which allows
students to
play with and
combine
written text
with visuals.
Then, the
students will
explore using
this app on
their own and
will create their
own stories
based on the
words and
visuals they
want to
combine.

writing
because it is
not in the form
of a paper or
an essay, but
is still very
much writing.
Application

4. Research
and
Reasoning

Students will
watch a
lecture prerecorded
about the
importance of
checking
your sources
when working
on a research
project. As
the students
watch and
listen to this
lecture, they
will take
notes on their
own accounts
of Evernote,
an
application
and website
that stores
and
organizes
notecards for
you. This way
students are
used to using
helpful,
electronic
notecards for
future
research
projects and
are learning
key aspects
to research at
the same
time. In class
the next day,
we will
discuss what

Allison Flaa
Mobile Learning Matrix
we learned
from the
lecture and
how the
notecards
helped or did
not help.

Social Studies
Students will
use the
Building
Titanic app
to learn all
about the
Titanic. The
students will
be broken up
into groups
and these
different
groups will
deal with
different
aspects of the
Titanic. The
groups will
put together
a
presentation
using media
of some sort
and will then
present their
information to
the rest of the
class.

1. History

2.
Geography

Students will
use Google
Earth in a
presentation
to show the
distance from
their country
of study to
the United
States. Also,
Google Earth
will allow
students to
see the place

During a lecture
about the
various
countries of the
world, the
students will
use the app
called Atlas to
see where the
countries are,
what their
shapes are,
what they are
surrounded by,

researching,
instead of
simply seeing
the countrys

and look at their

geographical
and physical
features to
develop a larger
understanding
of the countries
they are
learning about.
As a reward
for students
doing well in
class during
the day, I
would have
students use
an app called
Dinorama.
This app
helps
students
learn more
about money.
This would be
an informal
way of
starting to
wrap their
minds around
the concept
of money and
how it drives
economies.

3.
Economics

4. Civics

I would have
my students
explore
government
websites to
learn more
about different
ways to be
good citizens
and improve
the world
around them.
This would be
a way for them
to gain
knowledge and
learn more
about the

country they
are a part of.
Knowledge

Science
Students will
watch a
lecture their
teacher
recorded the
night before
class. The
lecture will be
about gears
and push and
pull factors
and how
these interact
with each
other. In class
they will
learn more
about these
push and pull
factors and
gears by
working with
the app
called Crazy
Gears. This
will give
them hands
on practice.

1. Physical
Science

2. Life
Science

Teachers will
videotape
students
explaining
and
performing
an
experiment.
The
students will
then use
iMovie to
create a
video which
captures the
nature of
the
experiment

Students will
experience cells
the first time by
interacting with
an app called
3D Cell
Simulation and
Stain Tool. This
app allows
students to dig
into cells and
explore cells in a
real life way.
Hopefully this
will give
students a
positive first
experience

behind it.

when learning
about cells and
seeing how
intricate they
are. This will
excite them
when they learn
about cells
further.
Teachers give
an example of
a drawing they
created of the
constellations
they could see
outside their
house at night.
Students would
take a mobile
device and use
the app
Luminos to
identify the
constellations
near them and
trace them
unto their
paper.

For students
who struggle
with reading,
I would
encourage
them to use
Prizmo. This
app allows
students to
scan a
document
and have it
read out-loud
to them. This
will help them
level the
playing field
when it
comes to
students
reading for

and in class.

Gifted/
Talented

For my gifted
students, I
would always
have a list of
apps for them
to use to
further their
learning
adventures. I
would have
apps that
would help
them create
stories,
encourage
them to read,
and
encourage
them to
practice math
problems or
learn more
about aspects
of science
they are
interested in.

Other
Reflection:
Mobile learning is something I have heard a lot about since coming to college. I have been able to see it in practice in one
of my classes, EDEL 320, and learned about it a lot from both ET classes. I think that mobile learning is a huge benefit teachers
have when it is used correctly. I think teachers need to be conscious of the tool(s) they choose to use in their classroom to make
sure they are not only engaging, but also constructive and helpful education wise. I think mobile learning should be engaging
because it will encourage the kids to learn more, to learn in different ways, and to always pair creativity with learning. I also think
that mobile learning is important as our world is becoming more and more media-focused, and children need to learn how to use
media effectively and safely. Finally, teachers should always be modeling and practicing the tools they want to bring into their
classroom before they have their students start playing with it. This way, teachers can effectively answer questions, guide
students in the right direction, and have a practical assumption of what the students will be able to do and learn by using this

Allison Flaa

tool. Also, practicing with the tools before bringing them into the classroom allows a teachers TPACK to increase as they are more
aware and have a greater understanding of how their technology is shaping their students learning. This model was helpful for
me to think about what mobile learning is, what it can look like, and the benefits it possesses for future generations of students.
