Extension
Target Age Group: Pre-Kindergarten children ages 4-5
Purpose/Objectives/Outcomes:
The goal of this study is for the children to learn about insects and how to
identify them. The objective of this activity is for the children to express
creative freedom while drawing. They will expand on the story read aloud in
class and show an understanding of concepts of print, phonological
awareness, and emergent literacy development. The expected outcome of
this activity is for the children to create an illustration and text that could be
added to the book The Hungry Caterpillar.

The students will be able to:

will write dictated text for S.E. and A.S.

Self-Evaluation/Assessment:
My plan for this activity was successful. The children enjoyed the read aloud
and the predictable text. There was enough planned as this activity was
extended over Center time to allow the children ample time to create their
illustration. The children maintained interest but some struggled to start the
project. These children need guidance through a discussion about the story
and alternate objects the caterpillar could eat. These discussions were
helpful for these children and allowed them to begin the activity. A few of the
children enjoyed making the caterpillar and forgot the objective. These
children were allowed to complete their illustration as they wished as the
process was more important than the product. I would repeat this activity as
all of the children enjoyed it. This activity could be extended by binding the
illustrations into a class book for all to view in the reading center.

Skills and student behaviors to be worked on next time:

Skills to be worked on next time include scissor handling and safety. Some of
the children needed assistance with the correct scissor grip and turning the
paper when they cut. The children shared materials well and some assisted
others who were struggles to cut a desired shape.
