RPN PRE-GRADUATE LEARNING PLAN (SMART)

NAME: TOYIN FAKUS-ATUNDAOLU

Venipuncture

April 17, 2015

Learning Goal #1:

I want to learn how to do venipuncture. During the course of my
pre-graduate placement I had observed how nurses are able to
do venipuncture. I found out for those who are not able to do it,
they had to rely on other nurses or units to help them do it which
could be time consuming for both the nurse, the patient and the
doctor who needs the lab results to know what care plan to place
patient on.

Area That Requires

Development:
Nephrology Patient Care

Learning Goal #2:

I am interested in learning about nephrology nursing care. I have
had opportunity to be in Respirology at William Osler and
veteran complex care at Sunnybrook Hospital, but I have not had
an opportunity to work in a nephrology unit. I remember
working as a sitter for a patient that was on dialysis. All the tubes
and stuff that was connected to the patient were strange to me
and as a PSW there is a limit I can ask the nurses going about
their work.

I will review my Theory

process
I will utilize You tube

from my E-text
Upon hiring I will look for
in-house training/courses
on nephrology with the

I will read more evidence

current procedures and
cares
Humber College offers a
continuing education on
Nephrology (NEPH 506)
which I can register for as
early as 2016 Winter post
CNO license.

Based on my nursing theory

and complex classes and
studies, chronic kidney issue is
can be deadly if it is not
managed well. A lot of
complex medical conditions
such as diabetes, high blood
pressure, and aging kidneys
can lead to chronic and acute
kidney disease or renal failure.
Thus learning this early in my
nursing career will be of great
advantage including:
Increasing my
competence and
knowledge in
managing renal
related issues
My patients and
colleagues will also
benefit from my
knowledge in better
understanding how to
care for renal issues.

Time Line:
Based on my determination and
opportunity to learn, my time
line to start learning is once I
obtain my license in May, I can
then register for the Humber
Course by Winter 2016
