Unit 4: Mitosis and Meiosis
Directions: Place a level of understanding, as aligned to the rubric, for each assessment that provides an opportunity to practice
a given learning target.
4 I completely understand all concepts and I can fully explain them to my peers with supporting examples and with
correct scientific language.
3 I understand most concepts, but I need to study more so I can explain them to others with supporting examples and
with correct scientific language.
2 I am starting to understand most of these concepts. I need more help from someone.
1 I do not understand these concepts. I need extra help.

Learning Targets
Using the phrases, DNA Overload and Exchange of
Materials, I can explain two problems that occur when a cell
grows.
By looking at two similar objects, I can identify which one has
a higher Surface Area/Volume Ratio, and justify which ratio is
better. (higher or lower)
I can construct a DNA molecule using materials to represent
the phosphate backbone and the nitrogenous bases,
including matching the base pairs.
I can make a pie chart depicting the relative amount of time
a cell spends in each of its phases.
I can distinguish between the three parts of interphase and

explain their purposes.

By manipulating materials, I can model the 5 different parts
of Mitosis in order Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase,
Telophase, and Cytokinesis.
I can identify which part of the cell cycle a given cell is in,
given a visual depiction of the cell.
I can describe the structure of DNA as it goes through mitosis
chromatin chromosomes chromatids.
I can predict the number of chromosomes in a cell, given
which part of the cell cycle is occurring.
I understand that chromosomes come in pairs, one from the
father and one from the mother. (humans have 23 pairs = 46
total)
I will be able differentiate between the terms haploid and
diploid.
I understand the difference between Prophase 1 of Meiosis
and the Prophase in Mitosis, as this is the key to
understanding Meiosis.

I can model and justify the purpose of Crossing Over.

I can compare and contrast the results of Meiosis 1 with the
results of Meiosis II.
I can differentiate between the process of producing sperm in
males and the process of producing eggs in females.
I can model the process of Meiosis by using the genetic
make-up of a fruit fly Drosophila.
*I can explain how mitosis in cancer cells differs from regular
cells.
*I can discuss how stems cells could be used to cure disease.
*I can follow the process of cell division given a video of the
process.
