The Genre Analysis Proposal
I have chosen the genre of feminist poetry to discuss what elements create the concept of
being feminist poetry. What is feminist poetry you ask? Feminist poetry is one of the many
genres that branched from womens right movements of the 1970s. It was created as an outlet
for the oppression many women were facing in that time and also serves as a voice for feminists
to speak their opinion to this day. In this analysis I will explore what makes feminist poetry
while also delving into its historic past.
M ontefiore, Jan. Feminism and Poetry: Language, Experience, Identity in Women's Writing.
London; Chicago: Pandora; Chicago, III: Distributed in the USA by Independent
Publishers' Group, 2004. Print.
This book is an important source for my analysis because it gives insight on feminism in
the past and in current times. It also discusses how feminist poetry has evolved of the years and
the components that make it such a distinct genre. Feminism and Poetry: Language, Experience,
Identity in Women's Writing by Jan M ontefiore uses writers such as Christina Rossetti and
Adrienne Rich to synthesize and critique what is to actually be feminist poetry and while
showcasing its effects on culture.

Whitehead, Kim. The Feminist Poetry M ovement. Jackson: University Press of M ississippi,
1996. Print.
The Feminist Poetry Movement by Kim Whitehead is an excellent source of information
on the history of feminist poetry. In this book, Whitehead discusses the evolution of this genre
from the 1970s all the way up to present times. She also tells of how feminist poetry became a
staple of the womens rights movement and the criticism from the government authors of this
genre received. This is an important source because it gives information on how certain concepts
are pulled from the world around us to make one genre and focuses on not only the evolution of
the writing but also the writers themselves.
Kinnahan, Linda. Poetics of the Feminine: Authority and Literary Tradition in William
Carlos Williams, M ina Loy, Denise Levertov, and Kathleen Fraser. Cambridge [England]; New
York: Cambridge University Press, 1994. Print.
This is a good example because it showcases how to properly indent paragraph. To
properly indent, you must flush the second line of your citation to the right .5 inches. That is very
important because it not only makes the paper neat but also easier to read.
Keller, Lynn. Feminist M easures: Soundings in Poetry and Theory. Ann Arbor: University of
M ichigan Press, 1994. Print.
This example is important because it demonstrates how to construct a good citation.
Without the help of the supplementary sites, there would be a lot of extra information that is not
needed. This example shows the kind of citation that should be made.

This is an excellent example of a source with multiple pieces of information to include in
the citation. In the example above there are two locations for the publication for this book. By
simply adding a semicolon between the two, it is still clear and easy to read.

Commented [O1]: While I really enjoyed reading this, Im

curious about your paragraphs regarding your examples.
These paragraphs were supposed to explain why you chose
the example and how it will fit into your analysis of the
genre. Looking at your citations, Im not really sure that
these are examples as much as they are sources. Please
make sure that your corpus consists of actuals examples of
the genre. I also noticed that one of your sources is used
both as research and an example. These two categories
cannot overlap. Finally, please ensure that your sources
help you understand feminist poetry as a genre, not just as
a movement. Go back and look at the questions that you
will have to answer. Will your source support your answers
to these questions?
