“This class seemed to have two sections, one where we did counseling
roleplays and listened to lecture, and the other where we attended
presentations on evidence based interventions. | feel fortunate to have
had the opportunity to listen to so many great speakers share their
passions about their work, | fel lke we covered a range of
interventions, from gangs to human trafficking, A strength of mine in
this class was that | provided thorough feedback tothe counseling
sessions that I listened to. | tried to think as much as possible about how
the person's counseling session used theories, and areas that they could
improve. A weakness of mine inthis class was that | did not speak very
‘much, There were points where | could have participated more, but felt
that my comments were not worth verbalizing, or that was not
knowledgeable enough about the topic to contribute.

This was a very interactive class, since more than half of Iwas spent
acting as a group for counseling ourselves. appreciated the hands on
experience of both faclitating and being part ofa group. In fat, |
learned a lot about my personally by being part of the group and going
through the various lessons and activities. As someone who is generally
shy and private, something could have improved would've been being
‘more open with the group. | enjoyed listening to everyone else, but
didn’t feel entirely comfortable talking about myself. A strength | had in

hhow to bring focus back to the lesson, while still acknowledging
‘what students have to say. Sometimes cutting off a student when
they go on an off topic tangent isnacessary to get through the

‘Observe process of how school
determines student placement in
classes in next grade level for
‘upeoming year
"At Mueller, grade level is more fluid with split lasses, The Fuldity
ofthe classes reduces the feelings students may have about
feeling eft behind. Observing resiliency monitoring macle me
realize how much thought and discussion goes into deciding what
class a student will be placed in the next year. So many factors go
{nto this decision, | haven’t even thought of some of them. For
‘example, in one resiliency monitoring meeting | heard a teacher
‘express concern for holding a student back because of his siz.
Since he was already bigger than the students in his current class
the teacher didn’t know if an even bigger physical size difference
next year would impact his ability to socialize and interact with the
other kids, Factor ike this ilustrate how much care and thought

‘Our intentional guidance lesson focused on how to Stay organized
to succeed in school. We chose this topic after we examined all
rade report cards because we found that a common comment
made by teachers was that students were losing or forgetting to

Improve organization. We also created a pre/post test to measure
results that was based on skills, attitudes, and knowledge. | found
that giving the presentation was the hardest part. Organizational
skill aren't something that many 8” graders are passionate about,
so it was hard to keep them focused.
