Loggerhead Turtle

(Caretta Caretta)

By: Luke Price

Intro
Loggerhead Turtles are sadly endangered.
But people are preserving their nests and
trying to keep them safe. As you saw on the
title slide the scientific name for the
loggerhead turtle is
Caretta Caretta
I hope you learn a lot about the loggerhead

Ecosystem
There are 3 ecosystems the loggerhead
turtles live in their lives.
1. The beach or the terrestrial zone
2. The water or oceanic zone
3. The nearshore coastal areas or the
neritic zone

Weight and Length

The loggerhead turtle as an adult weighs around 250
pounds. However the newly hatched babies way about
only 0.05 pounds! The average length of an adult is only
about 3 feet and the babies are only about 2 inches! So as
you see the loggerhead turtles are not that big of animals,
but is amazing how little babies weigh.

Life Span
The loggerhead turtles age is mainly
unknown but they reach the mating age
around 35 years old.

Predators
Predators of the loggerheads nests are pigs, sea birds,
raccoons, crabs, ants, and humans. Adult loggerhead
turtles have outgrown most predators except some sharks,
but humans are always a threat to turtles.Predators try to
eat their flippers because they are unprotected.

Food Chain
Here is a
picture
of where the
loggerhead
sea turtle is
in the ocean
food chain.
As you see they are
very high in the
ocean food chain

Diet
The loggerhead turtle mainly eats whelks, conchs,
jellyfish, crabs, and even some fish. So they are mainly
carnivorous, but they occasionally will eat some
seaweed and other seagrasses.

Symbiotic Relationships
Some whelks such as Veined Rapa Whelk and also some
parasites attach on to the loggerhead so they can migrate
to the location where they lay their eggs.

Reproduction
The females nest or lay eggs around April-September and
usually lay about three nests a season.

Turtles lay their eggs on beaches and then

lay about 100 to 150 eggs per clutch. A
clutch is a group of eggs in the same nest.
Sadly out of 5000 of the eggs laid only one
will make it to an adult and lay her own
eggs.

Physical Appearance
As you can see
the loggerhead
has some very
special
features
Such as its
two nails or

Usefulness to people
The logger head turtle is very useful because they
recycle the important nutrients in the ocean and they
keep the sediment on the ocean floor in balance by
eating hard shell animals as its prey.
