The Cold War

In 1979 a Soviet-backed communist goverment
took over neighbouring Nicaragua and took it
over. It seemed to be gearing up to invade
Honduras. In El Salvador, a strong left-wing
guerrilla managed to tip the country into a civil
war. A large American/Honduran airbase was
established at the heart of Honduran territory and
the country was flooded with American military
equipment and advisors. Clandestine airbases
and training camps dotted southwestern
Honduras, from which the U.S./backed
Nicaraguan Contras waged war against the
communits government of Managua.

Working together
The United States works with Honduras to meet
transnational challenges including the fight
against terrorism, narcotics trafficking, money
laundering, illegal migration, and trafficking in
persons and encourages and supports
Honduran efforts to protect the environment.
The goals of strengthening democracy and
promoting viable economic growth are especially
important given the geographical proximity of
Honduras to the United States.
