End of Year 9 Science Exam Revision

Biology Section
TERM 1 Transport Systems
Learning Objectives
STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

Label an animal and plant cell and be able to describe the simple function of each part
Describe the levels of organisation in a living organism
Define a specialised cell, tissue, organ and system with an example e.g. Circulatory System
Label the chambers of a heart
Identify the valves and state their function
Identify the Vena Cava and Aorta
Indicate the direction of blood in the heart, involving the lungs
Describe what double circulation is
Identify the pulmonary artery and vein
Identify the main structures of the heart, including the valves, chambers and blood vessels
Explain the different thicknesses of the left and right ventricles
Describe that the heart pumps blood into arteries, which carry blood to the organs; the
blood returns to the heart in veins and in the organs, the blood flows through capillaries
Compare the basic structures of an artery, vein and capillary
Describe that the arteries carry oxygenated blood (with one exception) and veins carry
deoxygenated blood (with one exception)
Make links between how the structure of the blood vessels are related to their function
Identify the structures found in the blood
Describe that red blood cells contain haemoglobin, which transports oxygen, and white
blood cells are involved in immunity
Describe the function of the platelets
Describe that the blood plasma transports useful substances such as glucose, to the cells and
removes waste products, such as carbon dioxide, as the blood passes through the capillaries
of the organs
Prepare a cheek cell slide
use the microscope to focus images at all magnifications
identify blood components on pre-prepared slides
Some students should be able to calculate actual size at different magnifications
Define diffusion and osmosis
provide an example of where diffusion is vital in animals and plants
describe factors that affect the rate diffusion
Define a hypothesis
the meaning of the acronym DIRECTORRS
Evaluate previously written student methods
Identify the dependent and independent variables from a hypothesis
Suggest control variables
Apply the skills developed from DIRECTORRS to a given hypothesis

End of Year 9 Science Exam Revision

-

Identify the dependent and independent variables from a hypothesis

Suggest control variables
Collect group and class data and construct a table to insert data
Draw a graph and make conclusions or identify trends
Comment on reliability and validity
Describe the role of Xylem and phloem in the transport system in plants * Relate the
function of xylem and phloem to photosynthesis
define transpiration and factors that affect it
Write a word equation for photosynthesis
state that light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll in the chloroplasts of green plants
Label the cross-section of the leaf and identify how they relate to photosynthesis
Some students should be able to describe adaptations of desert plants to prevent water
loss
state what a limiting factor is in relation to photosynthesis
List the factors that affect the photosynthesis rate, including light intensity, carbon dioxide
concentration and temperature
Use graphs to describe and explain the effect on photosynthesis of different light intensity,
temperature and carbon dioxide concentrations

TERM 2 The Effect of Exercise on the Human

Body
Learning Objectives
STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

Define the respiratory system

Label the respiratory system
Describe how the structure of the alveoli are suited
to their function
Describe the function of mucus and cilia in the respiratory tract
Describe the mechanism of breathing
Describe the composition of inhaled and exhaled air
Define tidal volume and breathing rate
State the word and balanced chemical equation for aerobic respiration
State the sources and fate of the reactants and products of aerobic respiration
Describe the use of chemical respiration
Describe the site of chemical respiration
Describe why carbon dioxide must be removed
State the word equation for anaerobic respiration in animals and plants
State the sources and fate of the reactants and products of aerobic respiration
Describe some of the practical uses of anaerobic respiration
Understand and describe the set-up of 2 types of respirometer - the dual test-tube example
and 2 flasks
describe the changes the that take place in the body at the start of exercise
explain the increased heart rate and breathing rate
