Curriculum Expectations

Students will explore classism, and connect it to news

articles, lyrics, and personal experiences.

Have the song playing as the students walk into the class, and get settled

Instruct students to pay attention to the lyrics and observe the video

Quick class discussion on observations of the song/video, and what the themes were
presented

Provide an example of where I have been treated differently based the way I have
dressed, and the ask if there are any volunteers who would like to share an experience

Introduce that the discussion leads us to our topic of classism- define it in web
organizer

Remind class about the respect rules we have established in class
Sensitive topics are going to be brought up over the next few lessons
Make a poster or refer to the respect poster of sounds like/looks like respect
Wall Street Activity
The teacher is the banker, dressed up, (may pick an additional banker depending on
class size)
The teacher has a safe at the front of the room with the best kind of chocolate/candy
As the teacher passes out unequal amount of sticky notes to the class, give
instructions, but do not tell the students what the sticky notes are for until all the sticky
notes are passed out
4 sticky notes can pay for a chocolate/candy
Students can be creative to earn more sticky notes
Debrief at the end of activity on how individuals felt during the activity
Unsinkable Class article
Hand out copies of the article to each student
Read the first two paragraphs to the class and demonstrate which parts of the article
you would highlight
Allow time for students to read in partners or alone, and to highlight important
information
In discussion ask the class about which parts of the article were surprising/interesting
to them
Discuss the graph, and how the students interpreted it
Consolidation

Journal Response
Choose either the lyrics from I need a dolla, your experience during the Wall Street
activity, the Titanic article, or a personal classism experience
Write a 1-paragraph reflection: Do you agree or disagree with classism? Provide
examples, and explain why
