Gutenberg was a German inventor, blacksmith, goldsmith, printer and publisher,

born in the fourteenth century, and regarded as one of the most influential people in
history. Most notably he is known for developing the movable-type printing press
upon which the first major book, the Bible was printed.
He was born in 1398 in Mainz, Germany, but later exiled to Strasburg. Early in life,
Gutenberg perfected his skill at book-making, with wood block printing. With
woodblock printing it was necessary to carve each individual block that was to be
used in the printing process. In turn, this resulted in fewer printings and higher cost
which made books often only affordable by affluential members of society.
