Equipment Needed: None
Number of Participants: 15-20
Activity Description: Facilitator will gather participants and have
them make a big circle around the room. The point of this activity is for
everyone to get to know each other and to increase communication.
Participants will go one by one saying their name and a verb beginning
with the first letter of their name. The verb will describe an activity that
the person enjoys doing such as running, playing or swimming. An
example could be Cooking Carlos. When the participant has finished
saying the action, he or she will demonstrate the action. Every person
in the circle will have their turn and in the end of the activity there will
be a discussion on leisure and its benefit to health and mental wellbeing.
Leadership Considerations: The TR specialist will explain the rules
of the game and any questions by participants will be answered as
well. TR specialist will join in in the activity and will process the activity
when it is over. Safety precautions include making sure the room is
clear of any obstacles as there will be plenty of movement by
participants. Discussion will include the many benefits of leisure and
how it relates to the individuality of everyones life. Participants will
have a chance to explain why they enjoy their specific verb and if they
have any other leisure interests in common with other participants.
Cerebral Palsy: For individuals with CP, there are a few adaptations
that can be made for this activity. For example, since many people with
CP have muscle weakness and overactive reflexes, it may make it
difficult to act out their verb. Therefore, an adaptation could be to work
in groups and have a partner act out the verb for you. Another
adaptation that could be made to this would be to have participants
draw out their verb and have everyone make a colorful collage of all
their pictures.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: ALS involves stiff muscles, problems
with coordination and overactive reflexes. Although the adaptations
are similar to the adaptations listed above, for this population, further
facets of the activity can be adapted. For example, since some
individuals cannot act out their actions, groups can be formed between
all participants with some individuals saying the names and verbs and

the rest of the team members acting out the verbs. Instead of
physically acting out the verbs, participants can also tell a story
instead of how the particular action brings them joy and for how long
they have been practicing it.
