How is the competition between government and private business affecting the survival
and growth of the economy?
Working Thesis: In an economy where private business should operate without interruption;
government controlled business is forcibly inserting its presence and disturbing monetary flow to
the private sector.
Refined Thesis: The US has a strictly private economy in which government controlled
businesses maintain monetary flow and an economic status quo, but now government business is
competing for profit with the unlimited financial backing of the US government.
Thune, John. "Unfair Government Competition Undercuts Private Business (Sen. John Thune)."
The Hill. Web. 11 Mar. 2015.
The government and its subsidiaries have very important functions that they need to
protect and uphold, but what happens when they become distracted? Lately businesses with
government control and backing have been competing with businesses that already exist in the
private sector. This competition is depriving the private sector of money, but more importantly is
distracting the efforts and resources of the government. This article is beneficial because it was

produced by a Senator John Thune regarding that exact issue; He proposes a new bill that
prevents the government from creating and/or backing a business that already exists in the
private sector. He more importantly brings this issue of unfair competition between the two
sectors to light.
DeHaven, Tad. "Privatizing the U.S. Postal Service." Downsizing the Federal Government. Web.

An indefatigable tank is looming in the recess of the economy, and it is plowing over
privatized business without regard. The USPS is indeed causing problems for private delivery
businesses, but at that it is also competing in such a maleficent manner that it is burning funds in
a manner not ethical. The USPS is LOSING 10-20 billion dollars a year, but the government
continues to fund its expeditions endlessly. This article is beneficial because describes the
inefficiency of the USPS, and explains why it is currently a sinking ship; the article also goes on
to explain methods for privatization and, thus, an increase in efficiency of the USPS which
would lighten a load currently burgeoning the private sector.
Hyde, Dan. "Public vs Private Sector Pay Gap Is 5,000 (or a Fifth of Earnings)." The Telegraph.
Telegraph Media Group. Web. 12 Mar. 2015.
Just how big is that gap between the private and public sector? The public or government
sector is supposed to provide necessary services at a premium; the services that should not be
profitable, but have to be performed. Currently a public servant makes more money than the
standard John Doe in the private sector. Why is it that these government servants and generating
more income than those in privatized business? This article is beneficial because it describes the

pay gap between those in the public and private sectors, and addresses the reasons why the
government is ahead as well as why it should not be.
