Critical Summary-Essay 4
In the Essay, The State of Gay, written in the Journal of Health and Human
Services Administration by Jurkiewicz, I found research for my essay on homosexuality
seen in the Disney classic, Frozen. In this essay, Jurkiewicz focuses on homosexuality
prevalence in the world within the last five years. Jurkiewicz studies sexual prevalence
and the patterns that he predicts will arise during this century. It studies how and why
homosexuality occurs and what areas in the world are more likely to universally accept
the new concept. He states, Given that even during most of the twentieth century gays
remained closeted, it is remarkable that as of mid-2011 ten countries (France legalized
same-sex marriage in 2013), Mexico City, seven U.S, states and Washington, DC, have
legalized same sex marriage (Jurkiewicz). Jurkiewicz concludes that America and other
more liberal countries will continue to leagalize same sex marriage and will do it faster
than other, more conservative nations.
I thought this article was very interesting and made very good conclusions
regarding sexual preference, the acceptance of it, and where it is most common. I feel that
it is true that America is very willing to accept homosexuality more than other nations
because of the amount of liberals we have in the nation. I feel that fifty years ago,
America, as a whole, was much more conservative and homosexuality was not at all
accepted. I feel this is the case for many conservative countries right now. I think that
within the next fifty years, more nations will accept homosexuality and it will be much
more common globally. Many reasons why people were non-accepting of homosexuality
back in the day were because many people thought that homosexuals carried HIV and
AIDS, which is true. AIDS is no longer a death sentence as it was fifty years ago, which
changes peoples mind of accepting homosexuality. AIDS is starting to not define people
for who they are and scrutinize them as people, but be a less common and more accepted
issue that people can live a very long time with. As the worlds health standards continue
to increase, I feel that many people will not contract HIV as much and prevention is more
common. Prevention of AIDS by protection will continue to help homosexuality be more
acceptable if people are not afraid of them. I feel that many conservative countries are not
as accepting of homosexuality because it is against all rules from any monotheistic
religion. It is stated in the bible that one man and one woman will be together and were
created for each other. This literal interpretation of religion has affected the acceptance of
homosexuality and creates disagreement with their ethical values.
