Lesson Plan

James R. Wallbaum

Subject & Topic: Math 10-3 Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators Date: 1/30/14
Page: 262

Time Required: 70 mins

Standards:
CC.5.NF.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators by replacing
given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an
equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators.
Measurable Educational Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to add fractions with unlike denominators.
Assessment:
Homework 10-3
Adaptations and Accommodations:
Students can continue to use handout to find least common multiple.
Students will work in small group for scaffolding purposes during a game.
Resources:
Projector, white board, handout, book: Envision Math, homework 10-3
Prerequisite Skills:
Adding fractions with like denominators.
Academic Language:
Least Common Denominator, Equivalent Fraction
Anticipatory Set:
Review homework on finding least common multiples.
Statement of Objective or Purpose:
You have added fractions with like denominators. Today you will learn to add
fractions with unlike denominators.
Sequence of Activities:

Review homework.
Teach converting fractions with unlike denominators into equivalent
fractions.

Give real world examples, such as cooking and measuring.

Model converting fractions into equivalent fractions.
Do guided practice 1 4 as a class.
Play the game Numbered Heads
o During the game, students will work independently on a problem.
When they have finished the problem, they will stand to signify they
are ready to work with their group. When all the members of the group
have finished, they will stand and discuss their answers until they
reach a group consensus on the answer. When a consensus is
reached, the group will sit and present their answer.
Assign homework 10-3

Questions to ask:

What is a common denominator?

Why do you need a common denominator to add fractions?
Why do you have to write equivalent fractions in order to add?

Conclusion and Summary:

In order to add fractions with unlike denominators, you first need to find the
least common multiple of the fractions denominators. When you have done
this, you may find equivalent fractions and complete the addition problem.
Self Evaluation and Reflection:
Today I thought the lesson went great. The students were engaged in the
process, and we were able to work through any hurdles that came our way. I
was able to see several light bulbs go on as I continued to explain the process
of adding fractions with unlike denominators. At this point, I feel that math is
my favorite subject to teach. I enjoy working with the students and helping
them to understand the processes and concepts behind the subject.
