The reason why these students are placed in the advanced math lab group is because they scored
high on their 5th grade state assessment last year. This math lab lesson is differentiated from the
other math lab groups because this group of students work on skills that are not typically covered
in their math class and they are being challenged as well in the math lab.
Unit essential questions:
Why is surface area important?
Lesson question:
What information are we gathering from finding the surface area?
Common Core or other appropriate standard:
CC.6.G.A.4: Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and
volume
Lesson objective:
Assessment:
Opening:
Discuss what surface area is
Discuss what the surface area formula is of a rectangular prism, triangular prism, and hexagon
prism.
Procedure:
Students will be broken into three groups and they will be asked to find the surface area of a
given object and then asked to construct the 3D model of their given object.
Tiered by Complexity
3 different tiers
Group 1: Madison, Erika, Lydia Least Difficult (students will be given a cereal box, they will
have to deconstruct it to find the surface area of the box and put the box back together)
Group 2: Gabe, Eli, Brianna Medium Difficult (students will be given a specific object
(Triangle prism) that they need to find the surface area and scale (twice) 3D model of that object)
Group 3: Andrew, Ben, Garrett Most Difficult (students will be given a smaller net and they
will have to scale (3.5 xs greater) the net to make sure it is the proper 3D form)
Closure:
Students will show their prism that they constructed and how they found the surface area.
Materials:
Ruler
Colored Pencils/Markers
Tape
Extra paper/Graph Paper
