Standards Met:

Standard 17: Foundations of the School Counseling Profession

Standard 28: Organizational and Systems Development
Standard 30: Research, Program Evaluation and Technology

Introduction
The ASCA Model Book consists of documents and data collect sheets that weve cumulated
during the past two years in our graduate program on the four components of the ASCA model:
Foundation, Delivery, Management, and Accountability. This assignment helped my group
understand what a comprehensive counseling program consists of, the skills to be able to
complete ALL the documents in the ASCA Model, and the confidence to go into our future
school sites and implement a comprehensive school counseling program.
Standards Addressed
Standard 17: Foundations of the School Counseling Profession
When starting a new counseling program it is important to have a solid foundation so that it can
sustain the counseling program. In this section we looked at the San Diego Unified School
Counseling Program Mission Statement, San Diego High School Mission Statement, and the San
Diego High School Counseling Mission/Vision Statement. We made sure that the San Diego
High Schools Counseling program was aligned with the district and schools mission/vision. This
is important because we want to make sure we support our administration and school by keeping
the same values and vision, but at the same time incorporating the ASCA Model (academic,
personal/social, and career domains). The foundation portion of the ASCA Model included our
crosswalk of guidance lessons that would be delivered at our school sites, which align with the

students standards and competencies to meet personal/social, academic, and career

development. Being able to show administration the crosswalk document is a huge benefit to
school counselors because it shows that we are addressing the needs of the schools and that we
are going to be impacting several students at one time by doing classroom guidance lessons.
Standard 28: Organizational and Systems Development
There are several parts of the ASCA Model book that required me to identify, analyze, and
evaluate system policies and program that has been implement at my fieldwork site. I completed
an analysis of students being pushed into alternative schools at my school site. Through my
interviews at my site I found that there is no procedure in place for the school to follow of when
a student should be placed at an alternative school. There is also no intervention in place to give
to students before they are put into these alternative schools. I was able to share with the school
what other districts procedures are set up and what interventions they offer their students,
instead of pushing them into alternative schools. My school explained that they could not
implement the interventions that other district had due to funding. Even though my school did
not want to change their system, through this ASCA book I learned that as a future school
counselor I need to gather data and analyze what systems need to be changed in order to better
help our students. My hope is that my future schools will take into consideration the
recommendations that I provide them on how to change the system and how it will benefit our
students.
Standard 30: Research, Program Evaluation and Technology
The School Data Profile in the Management and Accountability section of the ASCA book
includes a data analysis I gathered from Morse High School. The data I gathered included:
school demographics, Race/Enrolled in AP courses, AP Test Taken, AP Test Passed, advanced

math and science enrollment, SAT and ACT data, A-G completion, college going data, strengths
and weakness of the school and recommendations. The data analysis of the school helped
identify the achievement gaps at my school. Based on the achievement gaps that I found, I
researched evidenced based interventions on what schools have done to close these achievement
gaps successfully. Based on the evidence-based programs that have worked at other schools, I
made recommendations on what Morse can implement to close the achievement gaps. As a
future school counselors I think it is so important to complete a data analysis of the school to
know how to provide our students so that they are able to academically achieve in our schools.
Reflection
This assignment was the most intense and overwhelming assignment that Ive had to complete in
this school-counseling program. The documents in the ASCA Book required so much detail on
how as a school counselor we are going to measure if our classroom lessons, school wide
curriculum, and group lessons have had an impact on our students. Because we went into such
great detail in each document, I feel confident in my ability to fill the ASCA model documents
and be able to share it to my administration and explain the reasoning behind having a
comprehensive school counseling program.
