specific
strategies

Establish expectations for the lesson and refer to the classroom

rules. Explain to the students that they will be completing some
practical activities which will require their best behaviour
Introduce the topic of data to learners. Explain that data is a
collection of information. It can be collected by sorting groups
then counting those groups.
Ask learners what they know about data? Where they have used
it? Inform learners they may have collected data without
knowing it such as keeping score in a tennis or ping pong game

Hold up an arrangement of coloured blocks and ask learners how

these blocks could be sorted into groups (three yellow, two red
etc.)
Write the data collected on the white board and explain that the
numbers they used to explain the sorting and counting of the
different coloured blocks is data
Ask the learners questions such as which colour have the most

blocks?
Explain to learners that there are other ways of recording data
such as graphs and tables with tally marks. Explain that
recording the data in graphs and tables can make it easier for us
to interpret the information collected.
Model an example of a table with tally marks using the
information collected with the blocks
Ask learners to get their whiteboards out form under their desks
and complete a tally graph using the data on the board
Explain to learners that they will be collecting data on the
colours of fruit loops and then transferring the data onto a
picture graph. Explain to the students that they are not to eat
any of the fruit loops until they have finished the lesson.
Model an example of a picture graph on the whiteboard. Explain
to students they are to record data of the fruit loops in their
maths workbooks and then draw a picture graph using the data
in their workbooks.
Pose the question to students what time do you go to bed?
Ask students what data they would need to answer this
question? How could they collect this data? (Ask other students),
how could you record this data?
Explain to learners they are to create a question of their own
and record the necessary data and draw a graph using the data
they record. Give students examples of questions they could use
such as; what is your favourite food? How many pets do you
have?
Ask learners for ideas
Explain to students they are to come up with a question and
draw a table in their workbooks so that next lesson they can fill
it out

Ask learners what they have learnt in todays lesson?

Inform learners that in the next lesson they will be gathering
data on their question
