Task 1

- Handling of stories involving minors

You cant publish their name, address, school and any
photographs or pictures of them. You also cant publish any of
these for other people, who are under 18, who will be identified
because of this.
An example of this is the Baby P story which is about a minor
who was abused, they couldnt use the real name of the baby
because he is under 18.

You can see here in the report that the child is not referred to
by his name and no information that could identify him is
shown apart from the picture but he died so they have
permission to publish it because he cant be recognised.
-Contempt of Court
This is when the Administration of justice has been interfered
with.
When justice isnt carried out properly it can result in prison
sentences. For example:

-Libel and defamation

This is a law that protects peoples reputation, so it isnt
damaged.
These are defamatory:
Lowers them in the estimation of right-thinking members of the
public; and/or
Causes them to be shunned or avoided; and/or
Disparages them in their office, trade or profession; and/or
Exposes them to hatred ridicule or contempt.
-Coverage of elections
They must have equal coverage so the broadcasting isnt
biased. Equal coverage must be given to all of major parties.
They also have to give appropriate coverage.

However the BBC do not have to follow this guide lines because
they have their own codes.
Task 2
Sensationalism is when news reports are over hyped, this is
done so that there are more listeners and a story gets more
attention than it normally would because of all the publicity its
given.
An example of sensationalism: Donald Trumps reprise of
birtherismdespite the White Houses dissemination of
Obamas long-form birth certificate.
This is an ethical issue because the French paparazzi are
invading the privacy of the royal family. The royal family (Will
and Kate) sued the French press who took pictures of Kate
topless because they saw it as an invasion of their privacy and
they should have the right to not be in front of cameras in
everything they do.
Andy Coulson was jailed for 18 months for the phone hacking
scandal. This was an invasion of privacy because the phone of a
victim was hacked to attain information for a story, when the

person responsible, who was the News of the World Editor, for
this was found guilty he was jailed.
The article did find some interesting information from phone
hacking so the story gained a lot of publicity and became very
popular, however it is a huge invasion of the victim and the
victims family so it isnt ethical at all and this incident was
horrific in which the information was attained.
Task 3
The stories are:
1. The council budget cut on the airline runways.
2. The council do not declare the royal wedding day as a public holiday.
3. Weather
They are in this order because this is they order they are
deemed as the most important and relevant (according to the
radio station).
The stories are very recent, in the past week. There are no
follow up stories and they are the most recent and relevant
stories to the time this bulletin was aired.
The audio clips are relevant to the stories because the clips are
of people talking on the subject who know information on the
topic more so than the reporters so they audio clips are helpful
to the listeners so they have a greater understanding of the
events.
The type of stories are public interest, more interest to the area
where the airline runways are. The weather and the royal
wedding story are public interest to the majority of people
because it affects most people.
