1. What is human rights? According to the author, identify human rights issues the
current political regime in Russia have violated.

Human rights are rights that all humans are required. These rights include ideas
that have to do with freedom of speech, religions, and liberty. It doesnt matter
what race, ethnic group, or the religion you follow. Everyone inherits human
rights. The political regime have been violating these rights. Some people are
thrown in jail or punished for what they right in articles and are punished for
the beliefs because they are not what the Russian government wants or
believes.

2. Identify political corruption issues Mr. Levy identifies in Russia today.

Russia dumped a high top billionaire of an oil company into jail because he
supported a group that opposed the doings of Putin.

3. How does Mr. Gorbechev, the previous Russian premier, feel about the current
leaders? Why does he feel this way?

He feels that the government will ruin the jury system because they are
basically putting people in jail for no reason at all. They didnt carry through
with any crimes. The jury system has been cutting back the types of crimes
that qualify for trial because the juror people give the right attempts, but are
often afraid because it is not always what the government likes.

4. The caption for the picture on page one is titled, Batman and Robin. Explain this
caption.

Batman and Robin are like Vladimir Putin and Dmitri. They are the prime
minister and the president. Putin is like batman and really makes all the
decisions, while Dmitri is robin and when they work together they get the job
done.

5. According to the author [and Mr. Gorbechev, democracy begins with:

Elections, accountability and turnover,

6. In addition to the aspects of democracy identified above, which other key

ingredient is necessary for a democracy? According to the author, how does Russia
meet this ingredient? Back up your answer with facts.

Another key ingredient is the key of laws. Russian citizens think they still live in
a police state and not a democracy. They think this because people are denied
the right to rally or have their own opinion.

7. Identify two cases the author identifies where the Russian government has failed
the democratic test.

Jury has been cutting back on the types of crimes that should be brought to
trial. Also, the jury system. They still convict criminals, but the government
feels that the jury being just normal citizens will be fairer and they do not like
that because the government wants it to be their way.
